Organizations Filed Purposes:
TO RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT THE POTENTIAL TO REDUCE ENVIRONMENTAL HARM BY SHIFTING ELECTRICITY USE TO PARTICULAR TIMES; AND TO SUPPORT THE RESEARCH, DEVELOPMENT AND SPREAD OF COMMON PROTOCOLS FOR THIS PRACTICE.
MOST NOTABLY IN 2020, WE SUPPORTED THE CALIFORNIA PUBLIC UTILITIES COMMISSION IN DEVELOPING A COMMON PROTOCOL TO ENABLE BEHIND-THE METER ENERGY STORAGE COMPANIES THROUGHOUT CALIFORNIA TO AUTOMATICALLY REDUCE ENVIRONMENTAL HARM BY SHIFTING ELECTRICITY USE TO PARTICULAR TIMES. WE ALSO WORKED WITH MANY COMPANIES OUTSIDE OF CALIFORNIA TO EXPLORE VOLUNTARILY ADOPTING THIS SAME PROTOCOL. IN KEEPING WITH OUR MISSION TO SPREAD COMMON PROTOCOLS FOR THIS PRACTICE, WE ALSO SPOKE WITH REGULATORS IN OTHER STATES, MOST NOTABLY NEW YORK, ABOUT THEIR NEEDS FOR SIMILAR PROTOCOLS TO ENCOURAGE ADOPTION OF A COMMON PROTOCOL SIMILAR TO CALIFORNIA'S RATHER THAN THE CREATION OF MANY SEPARATE, CONFLICTING PROTOCOLS, CONTINUED ON SCH O.IN FY20, WE ALSO NOTICED RISING AWARENESS ON THE PART OF THE LARGEST ELECTRICITY BUYERS IN THE COUNTRY THAT IT IS POSSIBLE TO REDUCE ENVIRONMENTAL HARM BY SHIFTING ELECTRICITY USE TO PARTICULAR TIMES. UNFORTUNATELY WE ALSO NOTICED AN EQUAL RISE IN CONFUSION AS TO WHICH PARTICULAR TIMES REDUCE HARM AND WHICH DO NOT. THUS, WE UPDATED OUR EDUCATION WORK TO SPEND MUCH OF THE YEAR CORRECTING MISUNDERSTANDINGS ABOUT WHICH TIMES ARE WHICH AMONG MANY OF THE LARGEST BUYERS OF ELECTRICITY, INCLUDING TECH COMPANIES SUCH AS SALESFORCE AND MICROSOFT AND UTILITIES SUCH AS COMED AND PGE.WE HAD TWO MAJOR RESEARCH ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN FY2020. FIRST, WE DEVELOPED NEW "VERSION 3" ALGORITHMS THAT EVEN MORE ACCURATELY DETECT WHICH TIMES USING ELECTRICITY CAUSE THE LEAST ENVIRONMENTAL HARM, MOST NOTABLY BY INCORPORATING THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY'S NEW AND IMPROVED U.S. ELECTRICITY SYSTEM OPERATING DATA SYSTEM TO MEASURE POWER PLANT EMISSIONS. SECOND, FOR THE FIRST TIME WE BEGAN SUPPLEMENTING THE PUBLIC POWER PLANT EMISSIONS DATA WE COLLECT FROM GOVERNMENTS AND POWER GRID OPERATORS WITH A NEW TYPE OF DATA SOURCE: SATELLITE IMAGERY. THANKS TO A MAJOR GRANT FROM THE TIDES FOUNDATION ON BEHALF OF GOOGLE.ORG, WE ARE NOW APPLYING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE TO SATELLITE IMAGERY TO DIRECTLY ESTIMATE POWER PLANT EMISSIONS OURSELVES. WE WILL USE THE RESULTS OF THIS RESEARCH TO IMPROVE OUR ALGORITHMS, AND ALSO MAKE THE RESULTING DATA AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC.
