Not In Our Town (NIOT), the core program of The Working Group, works to guide, support and inspire individuals and communities to work together to stop hate and build safe, inclusive cities and schools. Storytelling that foregrounds solutions and encourages local action is central to Not In Our Town's strategy. Practical action guidelines, coaching, convening, and engagement tools for communities, schools and law enforcement are combined with documentary PBS films and online media that support local efforts to prevent hate, bullying and intolerance, and encourage all residents to participate in public life.
Not In Our Town (NIOT) is a movement to stop hate, address bullying, and build safe, inclusive communities for all. NIOT's approach is based on bolstering locally driven actions where change can be felt most acutely by those who are targets of hate and bigotry. NIOT combines documentary storytelling with training, social media, and organizing tools to help local leaders build vibrant, diverse cities and towns, where all are safe, included, and respected. NIOT offers local communities guidance through online coaching and tools that were developed through 25 years of collective intelligence from diverse leaders that make up our communities, including people of color; LGBTQx; indigenous and immigrant people; civic, school, and faith leaders; and law enforcement leaders.
FILM AND MEDIA - NIOT films provide a road map for communities who are seeking ways to respond to and prevent hate and bullying. NIOT is currently in production on Stories from the Tree of Life, a public television documentary and community engagement project that chronicles the courageous response of the Pittsburgh community in the aftermath of the deadliest anti-Semitic attack in U.S. history at the Tree of Life synagogue in 2018.
NOT IN OUR TOWN - In 2019 NIOT received requests for advice and support from 80 new communities and schools, a one-year increase of 167 percent. To address the national increase of hate and bias incidents, NIOT developed its Rapid Response Initiative providing resources, tools, and strategies to communities in crisis. In collaboration with the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, NIOT worked with Web developers to create a series of mobile Action Kits and printed fliers for campuses, schools, communities, and law enforcement, downloadable at stophateaction.org.
United Against Hate Week - NIOT convened and collaborated with Bay Area cities, counties, schools and campus groups to create a week of action, first launched in November 2018. In 2019, 34 cities and counties and 13 school districts passed resolutions designating the week of action, hosted events, screenings and rallies to raise awareness about how to stop hate and build relationships that can lead to long term hate crime prevention.
