THE MISSION OF THE FRIENDS OF PALO ALTO JUNIOR MUSEUM AND ZOO (PAJMZ)IS TO SUPPORT AND ENHANCE THE PAJMZ, AN EARLY YEARS' SCIENCE EDUCATIONFACILITY. THE PAJMZ IS VISITED BY 150,000 PATRONS ANNUALLY AND SERVES13,000 ELEMENTARY STUDENTS PER YEAR THROUGH ITS SCIENCE EDUCATIONPROGRAM, ON AND OFF SITE. THE PAJMZ SPECIALIZES IN HANDS-ON LEARNING,AND CHILD-CENTRIC EXPLORATION TECHNIQUES SO OFTEN LACKING IN ATRADITIONAL SCIENCE CLASS. THE PAJMZ BUILDING HAS 20 INTERACTIVESCIENCE EXHIBITS AND A SMALL ZOO, FEATURING 200 LIVE SPECIMENSREPRESENTATIVE OF 50 ANIMAL SPECIES, MANY OF THEM LOCAL RESCUES.THE FRIENDS OF THE PAJMZ WORKS CLOSELY WITH THE CITY OF PALO ALTO TOPROVIDE FREE SCIENCE EDUCATION CLASSES TO STUDENTS AT FOUR ELEMENTARYSCHOOLS IN EAST PALO ALTO, WHERE BUDGETARY CUTS HAVE ELIMINATED MANY OF THE SCIENCE PROGRAMS. MORE THAN 1,600 ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTSPARTICIPATE IN THE PROGRAM. IN ADDITION, THE FRIENDS OF THE PAJMZRAISES FUNDS FOR THE UPKEEP AND MAINTENANCE OF ZOO AND MUSEUMFACILITIES AND NEW EXCITING EXHIBITS.IN FISCAL YEAR 2018, THE FRIENDS OF THE JMZ FINALIZED THE DESIGN OF THENEW $25 MILLION FACILITY AND ITS AGREEMENT WITH THE CITY OF PALO ALTOTO REBUILD AND MODERNIZE THE JMZ. THE COLLABORATIVE EFFORT RESULTED INTHE GROUNDBREAKING AND DEMOLITION SHORTLY AFTER THE CLOSE OF THE YEAR.THE ANTICIPATED COMPLETION DATE OF THE NEW AND IMPROVED FACILITIES ISAPPROXIMATELY LATE 2021. THE LARGER, GREENER JMZ FACILITY WILL CORRECTSTRUCTURAL AND SAFETY DEFICIENCIES THAT INHIBIT THE JMZ'S OUTREACH ANDHAMPER ITS ESSENTIAL SCIENCE EDUCATION. WITH ENLARGED SPACE ANDIMPROVED FACILITIES, SCIENCE PROGRAMMING WILL BE SCALABLE TO MEET THEGROWING NEEDS OF THE COMMUNITY. THE NEW BUILDING, SCIENCE EXHIBITS, ANDZOO WILL ENHANCE THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE FOR ALL AGES AND LEARNINGSTYLES, WHILE RETAINING THE INTIMATE ENVIRONMENT THAT MAKES THE JMZ ABELOVED COMMUNITY RESOURCE. THE JMZ INITIATIVE WILL MAKE IT POSSIBLE TOKEEP THIS CHILD-SIZED, LEARN-THROUGH-PLAY RESOURCE VIABLE FOR FUTUREGENERATIONS.
