STUDENT PROGRAMS - THE STUDENT EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE (EXCOMM), Y-OUTDOORS AND SOCIAL ACTIVISM SPEAKER SERIES COMMITTEES, AND COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT LEADERS - INCLUDING 40 TO 50 STUDENT LEADERS - PLAN AND IMPLEMENT APPROXIMATELY 100 PROGRAMS EACH YEAR INCLUDING: THE Y-HIKE PRE-ORIENTATION ADVENTURE TRIP, DAY HIKES, CAMPING TRIPS, WORLD FEST WEEK AND INTERNATIONAL FOOD FAIR, DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. COMMEMORATION WEEK EVENTS, DECOMPRESSIONS, UNION STATION HOMELESS SHELTER - MONTHLY MEAL SERVICE, ALTERNATIVE SPRING BREAK TRIPS, MAKE-A-DIFFERENCE DAY, AN INDIA CULTURAL TRIP, WASHINGTON DC SCIENCE POLICY TRIP, A SPEAKER SERIES THAT FEATURED WELL-RENOWNED SPEAKERS (ERIK CONWAY, JAMIE TIJERINA, THOMAS ROSENBAUM, CHRISTINA BELLANTONI, ASA HOPKINS, RENEE TAJIMA-PENA, BRIAN TOON, CASEY DREIER, IRAM PARVEEN BILAL, KATHERINE CHANDLER, BRIGITTE ROTH TRAN, EMILY LAKDAWALLA, FRANCISCO DONEZ, MICHAEL LEDFORD, SCOTT PACE); AND EXPLORE LA OUTINGS, LIFE SKILLS SESSIONS, AND ADVENTURE 101 SERIES. 3700 INDIVIDUALS PARTICIPATED OR WERE SERVED BY THE CALTECH Y'S PROGRAMS. THE Y ALSO AWARDED THE LUCY GUERNSEY AWARD TO THREE STUDENTS FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY, THE STUDENSKI AWARD TO TWO UNDERGRADUATES FACING A CROSS ROAD, HUMMEL GRAY AWARDS TO FOUR STUDENTS FOR CONFERENCE TRAVEL, AND THE ADVOCATING CHANGE TOGETHER AWARD FOR SERVICE AND EDUCATION TO THREE CALTECH STUDENTS.
FRIENDS DINNERS AND ACTIVITIES - DINNERS, USUALLY HELD TWO TO THREE TIMES A YEAR, PROVIDE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR CALTECH ALUMNI, STUDENTS AND FRIENDS TO GET ACQUAINTED WHILE ALSO BEING EDUCATED BY GUEST SPEAKERS. GUESTS SPEAKERS RANGE FROM CALTECH PROFESSORS TO PROMINENT COMMUNITY MEMBERS. OCCASIONAL ACTIVITIES INVOLVE EDUCATIONAL FIELD TRIPS FOR ALUMNI AND FRIENDS OF THE Y. A TOTAL OF 199 PEOPLE PARTICIPATED IN THE 2 FRIENDS DINNERS.
THE CALTECH Y EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH PROGRAMS CONSIST OF THE RISE PROGRAM AS WELL AS PARTNERSHIPS WITH OTHER COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS TO PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR CALTECH STUDENTS TO SERVE THE COMMUNITY AT LARGE. RISE PROVIDES INTENSIVE MATH AND SCIENCE TUTORING AND ACADEMIC MENTORING AND SERVES 8TH-12TH GRADE STUDENTS ATTENDING AREA PUBLIC SCHOOLS, PRIMARILY PASADENA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT STUDENTS. TUTORING IS PROVIDED BY CALTECH UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE STUDENTS. IN ADDITION TO TUTORING, RISE TUTEES ALSO ATTEND COLLEGE PREPARATION WORKSHOPS, CAMPUS TOURS, AND CAN ENROLL IN A SUMMER SAT/ACT PROGRAM. IN 2018-19, THERE WERE NEARLY 150 PARTICIPANTS AND 130 TUTORS FOR RISE IN ADDITION TO 19 PARTICIPANTS AND 31 TUTORS IN THE SUMMER RISE SAT/ACT PROGRAM. OF THE CALTECH STUDENT TUTORS, 36 STUDENTS RECEIVED FEDERAL WORK STUDY, AND 117 SERVED AS VOLUNTEER TUTORS. ADDITIONAL EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES INCLUDED TUTORING AND MENTORING WITH HATHAWAY SYCAMORES FAMILY SERVICES, KIDS READING TO SUCCEED, THE PASADENA LEARNS PROGRAM, AND MENTORS FOR LIFE. TWENTY-THREE CALTECH STUDENTS VOLUNTEERED FOR THESE OTHER PROGRAMS. THE TOTAL VALUE OF SERVICE FOR THOSE STUDENTS WHO VOLUNTEERED FOR RISE AND OTHER EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH PROGRAM IS ESTIMATED TO BE AROUND 74,100.
