HARAMBEE SEEKS TO NURTURE AND EQUIP LEADERSHIP THAT WILL WHOLISTICALLY MINISTER TO THE COMMUNITY BY SHARING BIBILICAL TRUTHS, IN ORDER TO ACHEIVE THE RE-BUILDING OF URBAN NEIGHBORHOODS THROUGH RELOCATION, RECONCILIATION AND REDISTRIBUTION.
Community OutreachHarambee continued to provide emergency assistance to community members in need who are facing problems such as eviction, job displacement or other issues. Harambee was able to come alongside families to provide financial support and other services to help them navigate difficult circumstances. Harambee continues to be known as a safe place where folks in need can come to receive support and services. At the beginning of 2020, we began to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic and how we would continue to serve our community. We decided that we would walk alongside families, as we always have, in education and enrichment. We knew that impoverished families would find navigating online education a challenge so we began to provide one-on-one services, access to technology, and counsel.
Performing ArtsIn 2019 we expanded our performing arts programs beyond summer camp and allowed students to participate in an after-school performing arts program. The summer included a four week performing arts summer camp. Over 70 students participated in the program the program ran weekdays from 7:30 am-5:45 pm. Students learned many aspects of performing arts from beat making, drums, production, piano, dance, to acting and singing. The summer camp was held at franklin elementary; culminating performance entitled Motown revue. Families were so excited to see their loved-ones perform that there was standing room only in franklins 600 seat auditorium. In the fall, we held our annual harambee fest, a community event at our 1609 location. Over 300 children and families gathered to celebrate fall with free food, games, booths, music, and dance. Over fifty church and community volunteers made the experience a joyous expression of fall. Lastly, on December 21, 2019 students performed the way, in living color families had the opportunity to hear the story of Christs love through the arts. John Muir high schools auditorium was full of excitement as students received a standing ovation from over 1,000 audience members.
