Organizations Filed Purposes: RED HEN PRESS SEEKS TO DISCOVER AND PUBLISH WORKS OF LITERARY EXCELLENCE, SUPPORT DIVERSITY IN ACREATIVE INDUSTRY, PROMOTE LITERACY IN OUR LOCAL SCHOOLS, AND SERVE AS A HUB FOR LITERARY EVENTSAND ENRICHMENT. PUBLISHING WORKS OF LITERARY EXCELLENCE:DR. KATE GALE AND MARK E. CULL CO-FOUNDED RED HEN PRESS IN 1994 TO PUBLISH TALENTED WRITERSWHOSE WORK HAD BEEN OVERLOOKED BY LARGER PUBLISHERS. TODAY, THE PRESS MAINTAINS A CURRENTYEARLY OUTPUT OF 28 BOOKS OF POETRY, FICTION, AND CREATIVE NONFICTION. PUBLISHING THROUGH IDENTITYAND REGIONAL-BASED IMPRINTS, SUPPORTING EMERGING AUTHORS THROUGH 11 ANNUAL AND BIENNIAL PUBLICATION AWARDS LIKE THE QUILL (QUEER) PROSE AWARD, AND PARTNERSHIPS LIKE OUR COLLABORATION WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME TO SUPPORT LATINX WRITERS EARLY IN THEIR CAREERS, GIVE UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS A VOICE. AWARD WINNERS RECEIVE A $1,000 HONORARIUM AND BOOK PUBLICATION, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE BENJAMIN SALTMAN POETRY AWARD, WHICH GIVES $3,000 AND BOOK PUBLICATION. PARTICIPANTS IN RED HEN READING OR DISCUSSION EVENTS ARE PAID HONORARIA BASED ON INDIVIDUAL NEED (TRAVEL/ACCOMMODATIONS), STATURE, AND AVAILABLE BUDGET.

SPEAKING AND PERFORMING:RED HEN PRESS CONDUCTS AT LEAST 30 NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL LITERARY EVENTS EACH YEAR,TYPICALLY AT 90%+ CAPACITY. THESE INCLUDE PARTNERSHIPS WITH THE ANNENBERG BEACH HOUSE, THEBROAD STAGE, AND LITFEST PASADENA, IN ADDITION TO RED HEN'S ONGOING SERIES OF IN-HOUSE LITERARYEVENTS AND WORKSHOPS AT THE HEN HOUSE LITERARY ARTS CENTER IN PASADENA. RED HEN PARTNERSWITH CITY AND COUNTY GOVERNMENTS AND LOCAL ARTS AGENCIES TO HOST EVENTS IN PASADENA, LOSANGELES, SANTA MONICA, AND THE ANTELOPE VALLEY. (DURING THE PANDEMIC, ALL EVENTS ARE BEINGHELD ONLINE SO SUCCESSFULLY THAT RED HEN'S DEPUTY DIRECTOR HAS HELPED OTHER NONPROFITS DO THESAME THROUGH CLMP.) RED HEN ALSO WORKS WITH AUTHORS TO EQUIP THEM WITH RESOURCES AND SKILLSTO CONDUCT SUCCESSFUL READINGS AND PUBLICITY CAMPAIGNS.

STUDENT POETRY WORKSHOPS:IN 2003, RED HEN PRESS FOUNDED THE WRITING IN THE SCHOOLS (WITS) PROGRAM TO GIVE STUDENTSACCESS TO LITERARY ARTS EDUCATION THAT HAD BEEN DISCONTINUED BY THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA. WITSPLACES PUBLISHED POETS IN PREDOMINANTLY UNDERSERVED CLASSROOMS TO WORK WITH STUDENTS FOR ONE HOUR A WEEK ON READING POETRY NOT INCLUDED IN STANDARD CURRICULUM, UNDERSTANDING DIFFERENTPOETIC FORMS AND LANGUAGE, AND ULTIMATELY WRITING POETRY OF THEIR OWN. INSTRUCTING ARTISTS ARE HIREDBASED ON TEACHING EXPERIENCE AND PUBLISHING CREDITS, ENSURING THAT INSTRUCTORS CAN SPEAK TOSTUDENTS BASED ON REAL INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE. WITS INSTRUCTORS RECEIVE $100 PER WORKSHOP FOR ATOTAL OF $1200 PER YEAR. EACH STUDENT SUBMITS A FINAL POEM WHICH IS PROFESSIONALLY BOUND IN ANANTHOLOGY, THEIRS TO TAKE HOME AT NO COST. IN THE 20192020 PROGRAM YEAR, WITS SERVED 244STUDENTS OF THE FOLLOWING DEMOGRAPHICS: 81% LATINX/HISPANIC, 9% AFRICAN-AMERICAN, 5 %EUROPEAN AMERICAN, 3% MIDDLE EASTERN, 2% ASIAN AMERICAN, AND <1 % NATIVE AMERICAN. TODATE, WITS HAS SERVED 4,500 LOS ANGELES STUDENTS.
