Organizations Filed Purposes: The mission of the Mesa Refuge is to provide time, space and support for writers and other creative people to address the pressing issues of our time, with a concentration on the environment, the economy and social equity.

Because of multiple challenges in 2020 (the COVID-19 pandemic, wild fires, and economic uncertainty among them), the Mesa Refuge had to be nimble and adapt to quickly changing circumstances. Public health responsibilities compelled us to cancel our residencies during the first half of the year. But after restrictions eased in the summer, we carefully instituted physically-distanced residencies. During the remainder of the year, 17 writers and advocates, including the first recipient of a fellowship funded by neighbors of the Mesa Refuge, benefited from residencies. The pandemic spurred a shift from in-person programs to virtual gatherings. Beginning in June, the Mesa Refuge hosted online writing workshops, as well as topical programs, all involving Mesa alumni discussing subjects such as racial justice, immigrants rights, and the craft of turning archival research into stories. Despite a general climate of economic anxiety, the Mesa Refuge community stepped up to support the organization financially; Mesa Refuge generated nearly $300,000 from individual donors, foundations, earned income, and a forgivable loan.
