Organizations Filed Purposes: THE BAY AREA LYME FOUNDATION'S MISSION IS (1) TO ACCELERATE THE DEVELOPMENT OF RELIABLE DIAGNOSTIC TOOLS FOR ALL STAGES OF LYME DISEASE AND A CURE FOR LATE STAGE LYME THROUGH FUNDING INNOVATIVE SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH; AND (2) TO FOSTER PREVENTION THROUGH EDUCATION AND AWARENESS BUILDING.

TO ACCELERATE DEVELOPMENT OF RELIABLE DIAGNOSTIC TOOLS FOR LYME DISEASE & A CURE FOR LATE STAGE LYME THRU FUNDING INNOVATIVE RESEARCH; FOSTER PREVENTION THRU EDUCATION

As an independent nonprofit organization, Bay Area Lyme is able to partner with leading researchers and institutions all across the country to support the most innovative and promising projects in Lyme disease research, regardless of affiliation. True breakthroughs will occur only through well-designed research projects and at Bay Area Lyme, we have a rigorous screening and monitoring process, grant contingencies, and project reporting, to ensure that projects are effectively designed and funds well spent. In 2019, Bay Area Lyme Foundation funded 24 grants averaging $84,000 per award to various institutions across the country. Tulane National Primate Center was the recepient of several grant awards totaling over $545,000 that focus on the treatment of Lyme disease. Addtional funding of $262,000 to prior year Emerging Leader recipients was awarded to Stanford University, Kyronyx Biosciences LLC, and Brandeis University allowing them to continue their focus on therapeutic projects. Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai received a $250,000 grant award to develop novel therapeutic strategies to treat Lyme disease. Bay Area Lyme funded the first West Coast Continuing Medical Education (CME) program on tick-borne disease, hosted by Stanford University School of Medicine and Massachusetts General Hospital. The program included presentations related to emerging diagnostic technologies, potential future treatment options, and epidemiological statistics.

Bay Area Lyme offers free in-service education and training regarding tick-bite prevention to residential outdoor schools, outdoor environmental education, and professional outdoor program/field trip providers on-site. In 2019, Bay Area Lyme Foundation hosted 23 educational events and 5 Distinguished Speaker Series throughout the U.S. Our free training sessions are open to anyone wishing to learn more about tick-borne disease.
