AMERICAN LEGION RIDERS CHAPTER 105SIMPLY AN ENJOYABLE POST ACTIVITY NOW A COMMISSION OF THE DEPARTMENT OF CALIFORNIA FOR LEGIONNAIRES, AUXILIARY MEMBERS, AND SAL MEMBERS THROUGH OUT THE STATE WHO ENJOY MOTORCYCLE RIDING--AND AN IDEAL WAY TO SUPPORT THE AMERICAN LEGION'S PROGRAMS. SINCE MOTORCYCLE RIDING IS BECOMING A POPULAR FREE TIME AND SOCIAL ACTIVITY, POSTS AND DEPARTMENTS CAN BENEFIT FROM THE GROWING POPULARITY OF THE AMERICAN LEGION RIDERS (ALR) AS A WAY TO CONNECT AND COMMUNICATE ACROSS THE NATION. AS THE MEMBERSHIP OF THE ALR IS A VERY DIVERSE GROUP, SO ARE THE PROGRAMS THAT THEY ARE INVOLVED IN. BY ALLOWING EACH AMERICAN LEGION RIDER CHAPTER TO GIVE THEIR MEMBERS THE ABILITY TO MANAGE THEIR PROGRAMS AT THE POST LEVEL, THE PROGRAM HAS BEEN ALLOWED TO GROW. TODAY THERE EXIST NEARLY 100 LEGION RIDER PROGRAMS IN MORE THAN 32 STATES, AND MORE ARE ORGANIZING EACH YEAR. THE TYPES OF THINGS THAT THESE GROUPS ARE DOING INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:1. PARTICIPATION IN THE ANNUAL POW/MIA RALLY HELD EACH MEMORIAL WEEKEND IN WASHINGTON D.C. KNOWN AS "ROLLING THUNDER".2. SPONSORING OR PARTICIPATING IN LOCAL CHARITY EVENTS IN SUPPORT OF THE SPONSORING AMERICAN LEGION POST.3. RAISING MONEY FOR SUCH ORGANIZATIONS AS LOCAL VA HOSPITALS, BATTERED WOMEN AND CHILDREN'S CENTER, VARIED CHILDREN AND YOUTH PROGRAMS, A SCHOOL FOR BLIND CHILDREN, VETERANS RELIEF, NEEDY FAMILIES AND MANY, MANY OTHERS.4. SPONSORING OR PARTICIPATING IN MOTORCYCLE "RUNS" TO BENEFIT NUMEROUS CHARITIES, INCLUDING CHARITIES FOR UNDERPRIVILEGED CHILDREN AND MEDICAL RESEARCH, OR THE SEPTEMBER 11 LEGACY SCHOLARSHIP FUND, JUST TO NAME A FEW.5. PARTICIPATION IN COUNTLESS MEMORIAL CEREMONIES AND COMMUNITY PARADES.6. ONE GROUP IS EVEN SPEARHEADING AN EFFORT TO ERECT A "VETERANS MEMORIAL PARK" IN THE CENTER OF THEIR DOWNTOWN AREA.7. LEGION RIDERS ARE ALSO AN EXCELLENT TOOL TO TEACH MOTORCYCLE AND DRIVER SAFETY IN THE COMMUNITY AND IN SCHOOLS.THE RECOGNITION AND ACCEPTANCE OF ALR GROUPS BY LOCAL COMMUNITIES HAS BEEN REMARKABLE. THE AMERICAN LEGION RIDERS IN GARDEN CITY, MICHIGAN WAS EVEN HONORED BY THE LOCAL CITY COUNCIL, WHEN THEY DRAFTED A RESOLUTION DECLARING THE AMERICAN LEGION RIDERS POST AS A VALUABLE ASSET TO THE COMMUNITY.MOTORCYCLISTS CAN BE A VERY DEDICATED GROUP OF PEOPLE. WHEN THEY ARE ALSO AMERICAN LEGION FAMILY MEMBERS, YOU CREATE A WIN/WIN SITUATION FOR YOUR POST AND COMMUNITY!

SONS OF THE AMERICAN LEGION SQUADRON 105.THE SONS OF THE AMERICAN LEGION, DETACHMENT OF CALIFORNIA WAS CREATED IN 1932 AS AN ORGANIZATION WITHIN THE AMERICAN LEGION THE S.A.L. IS MADE UP OF BOYS AND MEN OF ALL AGES WHOSE PARENTS OR GRANDPARENTS SERVED IN THE UNITED STATES MILITARY AND BECAME ELIGIBLE FOR MEMBERSHIP IN THE AMERICAN LEGION. TOGETHER, MEMBERS OF THE AMERICAN LEGION, THE AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY AND THE SONS OF THE AMERICAN LEGION MAKE UP WHAT IS KNOWN AS THE LEGION FAMILY. ALL THREE ORGANIZATIONS PLACE HIGH IMPORTANCE ON PRESERVING OUR AMERICAN TRADITIONS AND VALUES, IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR OUR NATION'S CHILDREN, CARING FOR VETERANS AND THEIR FAMILIES, AND PERHAPS MOST IMPORTANTLY, TEACHING THE FUNDAMENTALS OF GOOD CITIZENSHIP. CALIFORNIA SONS HAVE ALWAYS ASSISTED LEGIONNAIRES WITH LEGION FAMILY PROGRAMS. OUR FAMILY BOASTS A COMBINED TOTAL MEMBERSHIP OF NEARLY 100,000 MEMBERS. JUST AS EACH LEGION POST DETERMINES THE EXTENT OF ITS SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY, STATE AND NATION, EACH S.A.L. SQUADRON IS PERMITTED FLEXIBILITY IN PLANNING PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES TO MEET ITS OWN NEEDS. THE S.A.L. HAS STUDY PROGRAMS RECOMMENDED FOR YOUNGER MEMBERS. ONE SUCH PROGRAM, CALLED "THE TEN IDEALS," TEACHES THE ELEMENTS OF PATRIOTISM, HEALTH, KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING, HONOR, FAITH, HELPFULNESS, COURTESY, REVERENCE AND COMRADESHIP. IF A MEMBER COMPLETES THE TEN IDEALS PROGRAM, HE IS ELIGIBLE TO CONTINUE WITH ANOTHER PROGRAM CALLED THE "FIVE-POINT PROGRAM OF SERVICE." THIS PROGRAM COVERS PATRIOTISM, CITIZENSHIP, DISCIPLINE, LEADERSHIP AND LEGIONISM.SONS IN CALIFORNIA FOCUS ON MUCH MORE THAN JUST MEMBERSHIP. AT ALL LEVELS, SONS SUPPORT THE AMERICAN LEGION IN PROMOTING A WIDE VARIETY OF PROGRAMS. SONS ASSIST THEIR POSTS IN OTHER ACTIVITIES SUCH AS VETERANS PROGRAMS, VETERANS ADMINISTRATION HOME AND HOSPITAL VOLUNTEERISM, CHILDREN YOUTH PROJECTS AND FUNDRAISING. SINCE 1988, THE SONS HAVE RAISED MORE THAN $5.8 MILLION FOR THE AMERICAN LEGION CHILD WELFARE FOUNDATION. MEMBERS HAVE VOLUNTEERED OVER 1 MILLION HOURS TO DATE IN 2013 IN VETERANS HOSPITALS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY AND RAISED OVER $2,000,000 THAT HAS GONE DIRECTLY TO VA HOSPITALS AND VA HOMES FOR A VARIETY OF ITEMS INCLUDING TVS, RADIOS, MEDICAL EQUIPMENT AND CLOTHING FOR THE PATIENTS.THERE ARE MANY MEN WHO ARE MEMBERS OF BOTH THE AMERICAN LEGION AND THE SONS OF THE AMERICAN LEGION. OFTEN, THESE INDIVIDUALS STARTED OUT AS YOUNG MEMBERS OF THE SONS. THEN, WHEN THEY WERE OLD ENOUGH TO SERVE THE MILITARY, THEY ALSO BECAME ELIGIBLE TO JOIN THE LEGION. SUCH INDIVIDUALS ARE KNOWN WITHIN OUR ORGANIZATION AS DUAL MEMBERS. THE SONS OF THE AMERICAN LEGION IS ONE OF MANY ORGANIZATIONS THAT SPONSORS AND SUPPORTS THE CITIZENS FLAG ALLIANCE, A COALITION FORMED TO SECURE FLAG PROTECTION LEGISLATION THROUGH AN AMENDMENT TO THE U.S. CONSTITUTION. S.A.L. VOLUNTEERS WORK TO ESTABLISH LOCAL NETWORKS BY HAVING PETITIONS AVAILABLE AND HANDING OUT INFORMATIONAL MATERIAL. THEY ALERT THEIR COMMUNITIES TO THE IMPORTANCE OF RESPECT FOR THE FLAG AND THEY ENCOURAGE FLAG EDUCATION PROGRAMS IN SCHOOLS AND OTHER LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS.
