Empower underserved children through mindfulness and other transformative skills
In the 2019-2020 school year, MLP served 10,300 youth through the Mindful Community Program and 660 youth through the Rise-Up Program each week. MLP was able to provide services to 22 schools across 9 Bay Area cities: Antioch, Bay Point, Concord, Crockett, Oakland, Richmond, Pinole, San Francisco and San Rafael. In addition to the direct service programs offered, MLP supported school staff, families and community in various ways. As MLP pivoted to serving schools virtually in March, we started to hear from families that they wanted their own mindfulness sessions. With this feedback we launched weekly mindfulness sessions for parents/caregivers in English and Spanish. We received so much positive input that we decided that this was something that needed to be woven into our weekly scheduling for the 2020-2021 school year.Simultaneously, MLP's Training Program worked with 2,350 teachers, school and district-level leaders, counselors, psychologists and site staff. In addition to the work across the Bay Area, MLP grew its work at a state and national level by working closely with partners to build strong mindfulness foundations in Salinas, Monterey, Pittsburg, Stockton, Atlanta, Kansas City, Miami and beyond. In total, directly and indirectly, MLP positively impacted over 70,500 students.Qualitative Data for Mindful Community & Rise-Up Programs:- 84 % of teachers incorporate Mindfulness into their classrooms on average 6 times per weekoutside of MLP teaching time.- 86 % of teachers found that students had an increased ability to pay attention during instruction.- 83 % of teachers saw drastic improvement in student's self-awareness- 83% of teachers noticed vast improvements of their student's self regulation skills- 79% of teachers indicated an increase in their student's ability to relate to others- 76% of teachers observed a heightened ability to settle themselves down
