To enhance the local economy and quality of life for the Indian Wells Valley.
The Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake suffered devastating damage in result of a 6.4 magnitude earthquake on July 4, 2019, followed by a 7.1 magnitude on July 5, 2019 as well as thousands of smaller quakes in the subsequent months. The Indian Wells Valley Economic Development Corporation (IWVEDC) immediately identified the need for action to ensure the repair and recovery of the local economy's largest employer and economic engine. The IWVEDC bridged communication gaps between the community, potential contractors, and the Navy to ensure entities were in contact with each other. As stated in a recent press release regarding a groundbreaking for reconstruction, "Getting to this point 20 months after the July 2019 earthquake would not have been possible without the strong support and advocacy from local, regional and state leaders." Program expenses went towards in person meetings before COVID and technology for virtual meetings once shut downs began.
One element of the local economy is tourism. As part of the mission to enhance the local economy, the IWVEDC embarked on a tourism promotion campaign by producing a series of videos highlighting nearby attractions. These program expenses went to the documentation of local opportunities and economic growth.
This program focuses on the needs of the areas largest employers to recruit and retain quality labor thus effecting the need for a higher quality of life and developing the local economy. We participated in a subscription to Buxton Company to gather data and identify opportunities to support the economic development of the area and meet the communities needs. Additionally, a study update was contracted with Counsilman-Hunsaker, an aquatic design expert, to support a grant application to build a community pool. The public pool shut down in 2016 and the community has been without an aquatic facility since then.
