Organizations Filed Purposes: Use digital technologies to preserve and provide access to historical source materials, especially ancient and medieval manuscripts and rare books.

EMEL pursued its core mission in projects that used scientific imaging technologies to recover illegible texts in ancient and medieval manuscripts and to digitally photograph an endangered manuscript library for preservation and access. EMEL continued its work to digitally photograph the Arabic and Syriac manuscripts of St. Catherines Monastery of the Sinai, Egypt. The Monastery holds the worlds oldest continually operating library, and is endangered due to the presence of ISIS on the Sinai Peninsula. EMEL undertook six four-week digitization sessions at the Monastery and is collaborating with the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) to publish the resulting images online for free and global access. EMEL applied spectral imaging to a 10th century manuscript of the Torah or Pentateuch held by the Museum of the Bible (Washington, DC). The Museum is hosting the images online for free and global access. EMEL applied spectral imaging to a palimpsest manuscript at the Austrian National Library in Vienna, in order to recover the erased layer of the manuscript. The erased layer preserves a unique copy of a treatise by Aelius Herodianus, a 2nd century CE grammarian and linguist. EMEL concluded an agreement with universities and research organizations in the U.S. and Greece to establish the Hellenic Heritage Imaging Center based in Athens, Greece, that will facilitate the development of imaging projects in Greece and the Eastern Mediterranean. In addition to EMEL, participating entities include: the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, UCLA, Rochester Institute of Technology, and the Arethas Institut (Athens). Gave educational presentations of the work of EMEL at churches and to scholars and students at conferences, including a presentation of the spectral imaging of manuscripts at the University of Athens.
