Organizations Filed Purposes:
The mission of the Buck Scholars Association is to foster the personal and professional growth of the nearly 300 Frank H. Buck Scholars and expand educational opportunities for a new generation of extraordinarily promising Northern California youth.
Scholarships that further educational purposes are the principal activity of the Organization,with 75% of the organization's time devoted to the selection and administration of this program. Scholarship applicants will be expected to show strength of character, enterprise, and personal initiative. Special consideration will be given to students who are unique, with a strong interest in school or community activities, and those who exhibit an unusual capacity for creativeproblem solving. Scholarships will be considered for a wide range of support - four year collegiate institutions, graduate school, community colleges and specialized trade schools. Charitable support will be provided to nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations for many areas: computers, software and technology equipment for classrooms, buildingrenovations, Artist in the Schools programs, reading programs, educational mini-grant programs, library expansions, pre-school programs and others.
In 2020, the BSA continued its work with the Buck Fellows Program, which provides support for Northern California students of disadvantaged backgrounds. A new class of Buck Fellows was introduced, and current students received ongoing support, especially with navigating their school systems amidst a pandemic. In addition to its service work, the BSA also facilitated events for its alumni network of 300+ Scholars and Fellows. Though COVID-19 forced all programming to be online-only, the BSA held various social events around themes and events.
