Organizations Filed Purposes:
The mission of the California Bicycle Coalition Education Fund is to support organizations who advocate for equitable, inclusive, and prosperous communities where bicycling helps to enable all Californians to lead healthy and joyful lives.
Supporting Shasta Living Streets, the Motherlode Bicycle Coalition, and the California Bicycle License Plate program in the Department of Public Health: Shasta Living Streets is a substantial organization that advances CBCEFs mission in Redding by helping to create better bikeways and trails and supporting more than 300 business and individual members and thousands of event and social media participants. They are opening an exciting facility to serve as a community hub for active transportation. The Motherlode Bicycle Coalition is a very small volunteer-led group that promotes safer bicycling in the Sierra Foothills adjacent to the northern San Joaquin Valley. The DPH is attempting to sell specialty license plates that will generate proceeds to support better bicycling throughout California.
Supporting Active Transportation and Economic Development in the Central Valley:The CBCEF was fully engaged in the execution of two Caltrans Sustainable Transportation grants during this fiscal year. The Active Transportation Connectivity Planning and Bike Sharing for Disadvantaged Communities project created blueprints for bike access to High-Speed Rail stations in Merced, Fresno, and Bakersfield and a proposal for a long distance bike route linking those cities. It also helped to craft a plan for a public-private partnership that would bring equitable bike share to Bakersfield. The project Promoting Safe Bicycle Travel Opportunities for Bicycle Tourism and Economic Development worked with stakeholders in Tuolumne, San Joaquin, Alpine, Stanislaus, and Calaveras Counties to develop plans for improvements to bike safety and accommodations that would attract tourists, support economic development, and improve options for healthy transportation and recreation for the counties residents.
Supporting CalBike and its Advocacy:The CBCEFs main efforts were in support of the charitable advocacy and education work of the California Bicycle Coalition (CBC), especially its advocacy that Caltrans implement a complete streets policy that would require the inclusion of bike and pedestrian safety facilities in every road repair project. The CBCEF also supported the California Bicycle Summit which attracted more than 300 attendees to a rich program of breakout workshops, plenaries, bike and walking tours, and parties and social events. By early 2020, CBCEFs support was used to help bicyclists and community leaders respond to the pandemic.
