THE SACRAMENTO ZOO INSPIRES APPRECIATION, RESPECT AND A CONNECTION WITH WILDLIFE AND NATURE THROUGH EDUCATION, RECREATION AND CONSERVATION.
ANIMAL CARE - THE SACRAMENTO ZOO IS PROUD TO HAVE AN OUTSTANDING COLLECTION OF ANIMALS TO EDUCATE AND INSPIRE OUR COMMUNITY. THE ZOO IS HOME TO 463 ANIMALS REPRESENTING 127 SPECIES. OF THAT NUMBER, 41 SPECIES ARE CONSIDERED CRITICALLY ENDANGERED, ENDANGERED OR VULNERABLE BY THE INTERNATIONAL UNION FOR CONSERVATION OF NATURE (IUCN). OF THE SPECIES HOUSED AT THE ZOO, 57 ARE MANAGED COOPERATIVELY AS PART OF THE ZOO'S PARTICIPATION IN PROGRAMS OF THE ASSOCIATION OF ZOOS AND AQUARIUMS (AZA). A NEW SPECIES TO THE SACRAMENTO ZOO IN 2019 WAS THE OKAPI, A RARE SPECIES OF FOREST GIRAFFE THAT ARE ONLY FOUND IN THE FOREST OF THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO. SACRAMENTO ZOO IS ONE OF ONLY THREE INSTITUTIONS THAT CARE FOR OKAPI ON THE WEST COAST, AND THE ONLY ONE IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA. AS A CONSERVATION ORGANIZATION, THE SACRAMENTO ZOO IS COMMITTED TO SUPPORTING WILDLIFE CONSERVATION THROUGH FINANCIAL AND IN-KIND SUPPORT. IN 2019, THE SACRAMENTO ZOO CONTRIBUTED OVER $167,000 TO WILDLIFE CONSERVATION. FUNDS SUPPORTED FIELD CONSERVATION PROJECTS WORKING TOWARDS SAVING AND PROTECTING VULNERABLE ANIMAL SPECIES AND THEIR HABITATS ACROSS THE GLOBE.
MEMBERSHIP AND VISITOR SERVICES - IN 2019, THE ZOO SAW 508,429 VISITORS DURING NORMAL VISITING HOURS AND AT SPECIAL EVENTS SUCH AS WINE & BREW AT THE ZOO AND THE EVER-POPULAR ICE CREAM SAFARI. IMPROVEMENTS TO THE ZOO'S VISITOR EXPERIENCE INCLUDED A RENOVATION TO THE LION EXHIBIT, A PROJECT WHICH DOUBLES THE LIONS LIVING SPACE AND ALLOWS GUESTS TO GET EYE-TO-EYE WITH THIS IMPRESSIVE SPECIES THROUGH INCH-THICK EXHIBIT WINDOWS. ALSO, IN SEPTEMBER THE ZOO HOSTED "DISCOVER THE DINOSAURS" - A TEMPORARY EXHIBIT, WHICH INCLUDED THE MIGHTY TYRANNOSAURUS REX AND OTHER HUGE DINOSAURS THAT DELIGHTED OUR VISITORS.
EDUCATION AND SUSTAINABILITY - THE SACRAMENTO ZOO WAS FILLED WITH FUN AND FACTS IN 2019, PROVIDING LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES FOR EVERYONE. FIELD TRIPS, SCHOOL VISITS, OVERNIGHTS, AND ANIMAL ENCOUNTERS ARE A FEW OF THE MOST POPULAR EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES. WILDLIFE STAGE SHOWS, ANIMAL ENCOUNTERS AND KEEPER CHATS WERE PRESENTED TO NEARLY 100,000 GUESTS. IN ADDITION, OVER 50,000 SCHOOL CHILDREN PARTICIPATED IN ZOO PROGRAMS AND FIELD TRIPS.
