UCSC'S VISION IS TO ENSURE ALL SCHOLARS AND STAFF LEARN, THRIVE, AND CONTRIBUTE TO CREATING A MORE JUST SOCIETY. WE STRIVE TO SEE ALL SCHOLARS AND STAFF DEVELOP THE SKILLS FOR CRITICAL THINKING, COLLABORATION, CREATIVITY, AND COMMUNICATION, READY AND EAGER TO BE RESPONSIBLE CITIZENS AND PROACTIVE CONTRIBUTORS TO THE WORLD AROUND THEM. OUR MISSION IS TO DEMONSTRATE THE EFFICACY OF AND ADVOCATE FOR BODY-BRAIN COMPATIBLE APPROACHES AS A WAY TO DRIVE SCHOLAR ACHIEVEMENT AND DEVELOPMENT IN K-12 EDUCATION, ESPECIALLY IN UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES.
URBAN CHARTER SCHOOLS COLLECTIVE OBTAINED A SCHOOL FACILITY IN JULY 2010 AND OPENED THE DOORS TO ITS FIRST K-6 PUBLIC CHARTER SCHOOL YAV PEM SUAB ACADEMY (YPSA), ON AUGUST 1, 2010. THE SCHOOL SERVED 260 ELEMENTARY STUDENTS IN ITS FIRST YEAR OF OPERATION AND HAS SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASED ITS CURRENT ENROLLMENT TO 486 STUDENTS. YPSA'S ACADEMIC GROWTH CONTINUES IN AN UPWARD TREND. IN ITS FOURTH YEAR OF ADMINISTERING THE CALIFORNIA ASSESSMENT OF STUDENT PERFORMANCE AND PROGRESS (CAASPP) ASSESSMENT, YPSA'S PERCENTAGE OF STUDENTS MEETING AND EXCEEDING EXPECTATIONS IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS/LITERACY OUTPERFORMED THAT OF BOTH ITS AUTHORIZING AGENCY AND THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA, WHILE IN MATHEMATICS THEY OUTPERFORMED THAT OF THEIR AUTHORIZING AGENCY.
UCSC PROVIDES THE TOOLS AND SUPPORT NECESSARY TO ACHIEVE YPSA'S MISSION. IT OFFERED AMPLE AND ONGOING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES IN HIGHLY EFFECTIVE TEACHING (HET) TO IMPROVE SCHOLAR LEARNING AND PERFORMANCE BY SUPPORTING TEACHER CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT IN CONCEPTUAL AND INTEGRATED THEMATIC PLANNING AND TEACHING APPROACH. STAFF AND FACULTY ALSO CONTINUE TO RECEIVE COACHING IN BODY-BRAIN EDUCATION PRACTICES AND ENRICHING LANGUAGE AND LITERACY INSTRUCTION TO RAISE ACHIEVEMENT FOR CULTURALLY AND LINGUISTICALLY DIVERSE STUDENTS.
UCSC CONTINUES TO WORK WITH LOCAL ADVOCACY ORGANIZATIONS LIKE THE CALIFORNIA CHARTER SCHOOLS ASSOCIATION (CCSA), CHARTER SCHOOLS DEVELOPMENT CENTER (CSDC), AND SCHOOLS SERVICES OF CALIFORNIA (SCC). AS SUCH, IT STAYS ABREAST OF CURRENT COMPLIANCE AND OBTAINS THE PROPER TRAINING NEEDED FOR GOVERNANCE.
