Organizations Filed Purposes:
The organization's mission is to conduct research studies on air pollution caused by motor vehicles in Ethiopia, provide the results of the research studies to the applicable Ethiopian government and academic entities, and bring awareness to the public and to interested groups on the health risks of uncontrolled motor vehicle emissions in Ethiopia.
The organization raised awareness through media campaigns and public outreach on the harms of uncontrolled motor vehicle emissions in Ethiopia. The media campaign included public service messages transmitted through print, radio, and TV outlets. The outreach included free inspection and maintenance (I/M) on over 150 vehicles in Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia, to demonstrate that malfunctioning vehicles are major contributors to air pollution in the city. I/M was provided through the use of an instrumented public relations minivan equipped with spare parts and automotive emissions test equipment for gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles. The serviced vehicle population included private, government, commercial, and NGO vehicles. The organization provided workshops/presentations for stakeholders, government authorities, civic and educational institutions, and government machinery manufacturers to promote awareness on the harms associated with uncontrolled vehicle emissions
The organization provided capacity building trainings to over 100 government technicians on automotive emission control systems technology. The trainings entailed six-day sessions including hands-on experience in applying technical theoretical principles in practical public settings where government technicians assisted in actual inspections of vehicles during roadside public outreach I/M demonstrations. The technicians represented the transport sector and other key government actors in Ethiopia. Over 11 sessions of capacity building training were provided for both government and academic stakeholders. Capacity building trainings were concentrated on key government technicians positioned to serve as coordinators of possible future I/M programs in Ethiopia.
The organization designed the concept and methodology of a pilot I/M program to directly promote the impact of a long-term coordinated vehicle emissions reduction effort in Ethiopia. Workshops with important government actors were conducted to present and formally deliver the proposed program concept to the applicable decision-makers for possible implementation and program building.
