Organizations Filed Purposes:
ASSIST THE FOREST SERVICE WITH THE CARE OF THE NATIONAL FOREST. THIS IS ACCOMPLISHED BY EDUCATION, LAND MANAGEMENT AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF VOLUNTEERS AND PARTNERSHIPS WITH THE NATIONAL FOREST, GOVERNMENT AGENCIES, CORPORATIONS AND OTHER NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS.
URBAN CONSERVATION CORPS- A WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM THAT OFFERS YOUNG MEN AND WOMEN, AGES 18-25 AND YOUTH AGES 13-17, THE CHANGE TO SERVE ON OUR SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA MOUNTAINS AND BECOMEEMPLOYABLE CITIZENS THROUGH HARD WORK IN ENVIROMENTAL CONSERVATION. ACCOMPLISHMENTS INCLUDED; MAINTAINED AND RESTORED 500 ACRES OF PUBLIC LANDS, REVYVLED 10 TONS OF PLASTIC BOTTLES AND CANS, 100,000 POUNDS OF E-WASTE AND 30 TONS OF WASTE TIRES FROM PUBLIC LANDS, MAINTAINED SEVEN HISTORIC FIRE LOOKOUT TOWERS, PLANTED 500 NATIVE PLANTS, COORDINATED 70,000 VOLUNTEER SERVICE HOURS, GRADUATED 13 URBAN CONSERVATION CORPSMEMBERS THROUGH JOHN MUIR CHARTER SCHOOL AND COORDINATED OVER 20,000 AMERICORPS SERVICE HOURS TO MITIGATE WILDFIRES IN THE SAN BERNARDINO NATIONAL FOREST.
OFF HIGHWAY VEHICLE EDUCATION AND SAFETY (OHV)- MORE THAN 300 OHV PATROL VOLUNTEERS CONTRIBUTED OVER 20,000 HOURS EACH YEAR IN TEACHING VISITORS TRAIL ETHICS AND LAND RESOURCE STEWARDSHIP, MAINTAINED OVER 900 MILES OF OHV ROADS AND TRAILS, LOGGED OVER 38,00 MILES OF PATROLS, EDUCATED 4,400 PEOPLE ON RESPONSIBLE RECREATION, IN ADDITION, THEY MAINTAIN AND MONITOR TRAILS TO HELP OHV ENTHUSIASTS RECREATE SAFETLY WHILE PROTECTING THE PUBLIC LAND THEY VISIT.
OTHER PROGRAMS INCLUDE THE NATIONAL CHILDREN'S FOREST, A 3,400 ACRE SITE NESTLED IN THE SAN BERNARDINO MOUNTAINS. ALONG WITH RECREATION OPPORTUNITIES, CHILDREN'S FOREST HOSTS A VISITOR INFORMATION CENTER, AN ENVIROMENTAL EDUCATION PROGRAM, A YOUTH LEADERSHIP PROGRAM AND AN ACTIVE REFORESTATION PROGRAM. CHILDRENS'S FOREST IS A PLACE WHERE CHILDREN LEARN TO BECOM STEWARDS OF THE LAND THROUGH EDUCATION AND OPPORTUNITIES. THE BIG BEAR DISCOVERY CENTER IS AN EDUCATIONAL AND INFORMATIONAL PORTAL TO THE NATIONAL FOREST. THE GOAL IS TO HEIGHTEN VISITOR AWARENESS ON HOW TO BECOME A MORE RESPOSIBLE CARETAKER OF A NATIONAL FOREST WHILE INCREASING THEIR ENJOYMENT AND KNOWLEDGE OF CALIFORNIA'S MOST RECREATED FORESTLAND. EDUCATED OVER 214,800 VISITORS THROUGHT THE BIG BEAR DISCOVERY CENTER, FIRE LOOKOUTS AND CHILDRENS FOREST. THE FIRE LOOKOUTS DONATED MORE THAN 17,000 VOLUNTEER HOURS EACH YEAR FROM MAY THROUGH NOVEMBER SUPPORTING LOOKOUTS IN SPOTTING SMOKE, EDUCATING VISITORS ABOUT THE HISTORY OF FIRE LOOKOUTS, MOUNTAIN ECOLOGY, AND KEEPING THE LOOKOUTS A VIBRANT PART OF OUT LOCAL MOUNTAIN AND COMMUNITIES SAFE.
