BRIDGE OF HOPE HELPS FAMILIES IN TRANSITION.
2019 was another wonderful year at the Bridge. A year of growth and change!February of 2020, makes fifteen years that we have been serving the community. We continue to meet the needs of hundreds of people every month, by providing food, clothing, householditems and furniture.Agency and new family day- Every Wednesday, case workers, from over seventy different agencies throughout San Diego, who work in all different kinds of agencies that care for people who are in or coming out of distressing situations, including schools, and hospitals, make appointments for their clients. These are people who are in a transition, or starting over. These families or individuals are welcomed to shop in each of our departments; furniture, kitchen, bed and bathroom, the clothing closet, food department as well as receive toiletries, and baby items including toiletries and diapers. This process takes about an hour and a half and is focused one on one time with each client. We serve fifteen families every Wednesday. We have ten volunteers serving with us each Wednesday.Weekly community food distribution- Every Friday, at 11:30, we welcome between 250-300 families. Many are senior citizens living on social security, about fifty percent. A lot of refugee families join us, who are now working, and no longer on government assistance. They tell us how essential this food help is. Mostly large families, living on minimum wage jobs, struggling to pay their bills, and discovering that food is very expensive. Not to mention rents in City Heightsare at an all time high. We distribute about 12,000- 15,000 pounds of fresh produce and other foods each week. Our weekly food partners are Feeding San Diego, Trader Joe's, Starbucks, San Diego Food Bank and Santee Food Bank. We have approximately twenty volunteers working each Friday for food distribution.Community Days- Every second and fourth Saturday from 9:00 to 12:00, is our Community Day. We have families, charities and church groups come and host game tables, craft tables, and play basketball, and soccer with our kids. Its a way to stay connected with our families, meet new families and enjoy the morning together in a safe, loving, and fun place. The clothing closet is open that day, serving up to 150 families, and we have a food distribution as well for those families. Our community volunteers, about 25 of them, come together to make this all happen.Special events in 2019- We had our annual Easter basket event that was a huge success. About three hundred children in the community received Easter baskets. There are many faithful and loving people who put this together for us each year! We had thirty-five volunteers with us for the event. Our annual Nathan Upton Scholarship Award was in June. Seven winners in our community won laptop computers, Amazon gift cards and Bibles this year. Cecelia Brito has headed this up to honor my son Nathan, and my family and I are truly touched by her great effort. The backpack event was another successful event where 350 children got backpacks filled with school supplies. We never know how many kids will show up; not one child left out, not one backpack leftover. We had 30 volunteers with us that day.National Charity League volunteers hosted our Harvest Festival, for our families to come and enjoy a safe and fun experience. Food was provided. A special day for our families and volunteers! Thirty-two volunteers served with us that day.Our annual Christmas Bazaar went beautifully well! Two days where parents could come and shop for their children, wrap their gifts and have ready for Christmas morning. They were invited to pick out two gifts per child. We had over four hundred families come. Churches, students, organizations and our own supporters, provided gifts and funds to make this happen. We had a total of 83 volunteers serving at the two day event. We partnered with Steps of Justice and Kaleo missions and hosted teams throughout the spring and summer. Each week we received a new group of high school or college students and they assisted us with food distribution, picking up donations, serving clients, cleaning around the property, and putting on Kids clubs for the neighborhood children each afternoon.Transition and new changesNational Charity League and Home Depot came together and created a tutoring room for the local children at our new site, which is right next door to the site we have had since 2011. We were voted by National Charity League to be the recipient of this great gift. They took a raw and ugly space and made it beautiful and functional, along with the yard space. They also providedfurnisher for the new space, along with astroturf and patio furniture. Our volunteer partners in 2019 were National Charity League, Teen Volunteers in Action, Kaleo Missions, Grace Church East County, The Flood Church, Gracepoint Church, Fathers House Church, Spirit of the Bride, Surrendered Ministries, Makers Church, All Peoples Church, Rock Church San Diego and Coast Vineyard.
