BFI's mission is to fight poverty by sustaining communities through partnerships in education and economic empowerment.
In 2019, BFI implemented IT training for youth, while improving upon our teacher trainings, English curriculum, and class size in English clubs. In the area of economic empowerment, BFI offered financial training and support to 1,056 participants, primarily women.
Education & IT Projects - In early 2019, due to challenges of demand, BFI identified the need to develop pilot projects within the existing areas of beginner and intermediate English classroom learning to improve upon our teacher trainings, build stronger English curriculum, and limit class size to 25 students. BFI trained 204 English instructors, developed teacher & student manuals, and organized 4,180 students into classrooms of 20 students each. BFI also implemented Information Technology (IT) Think Tanks in four provinces. Ten IT instructors were trained and 123 students acquired training in Microsoft Office Suite and HP Life courses for job skill training.
Economic Empowerment - Building upon the previous success of BFI's Women Empowered (WE) pilot project with partner, Project Concern International (PCI), A Global Communities partner, BFI expanded our efforts in 2019 of the savings group program to 1,056 beneficiaries. Primarily serving rural women in the province of Gitega, the program goal focuses on creating dignified work, business opportunities, and building sustainable communities. Weekly training is offered to participants and community service is performed by all as part of the program.
Library Project - BFI continued to expand community libraries, primarily serving local schools with no access to English books. The 126 BFI libraries hold 140,000 donated English books covering school subjects, English learning curriculum, novels, and children's books.
