Organizations Filed Purposes: DETOUR (Depositing Empowerment Through Outreach & Urban Redevelopment) is a mentoring program for girls of color. Our mission is to increase access to education and employment opportunities for girls through our Focused And Naturally Confident Youth (F.A.N.C.Y.) Leadership programs (Expo, Leadership Academy, and Ambassador Internships.)

During the reporting year, DETOUR - Continued to provide job opportunities for program alumni who work for the organization, have graduated or are attending college, and continue to give back to their community. - Increased our enrollment of teen girls in our FANCY Teen Girls Leadership Academy programs within the community and at school sites to 82 - Partnered with San Diego Workforce Partnership and the Jackie Robinson YMCA to provide workforce training and paid internships for our high school girls - Teamed up with Corporate Sponsors to expand our FANCY In STEAM Initiative - to engage girls to ignite their interest in entering in STEAM career fields. Our goal is to continue cultivating a diverse talent pipeline in STEAM inclusive of girls of color. Since 2016, 100% of girls have been accepted into 4-year universities (11) and over half are studying in STEAM fields. - During the FANCY Teen Girls Leadership Academy the girls participated in the following STEAM events: Solar Turbines Company Tour, Elementary Institute of Science Drone Camp, Fleet Science Center Workshops, Del Mar STEAM Maker Fest, Biocom Science & Engineering Festival, National Council of Negro Women STEAM Expo, iFly Indoor Skydiving & Aerodynamics Education - Continued to expose the girls to new experiences including Snowboarding in Big Bear through our partnership with Outdoor Outreach! Additional field trips included Camping in Julian, the FANCY Cruise to Ensenada, and financial education through the Finance Park at Junior Achievement - Continued the DETOUR Mentor Program for teen girls in Juvenile Hall and hosted Empowerment Days bringing professional women in from the community to speak to the girls and provide 1-on-1 mentoring. - Awarded scholarships to 8 graduating high school seniors - Hosted our 3rd Annual FANCY Teen Girls Awards Ceremony, honoring 10 teen girls making a difference in our community - Hosted our free 9th Annual FANCY Teen Girls Expo & FANCY STEAM Fair, serving 400 teen girls, parents, and community members - Launched our All About Girls of Color Initiative with Gabriela B. Delgado, Director/Founder of Saving Our Starfish , which unites individuals passionate about youth equity and inclusion to reduce the exclusionary practices and marginalization of girls of color by providing training on current trends impacting them and evidence-based practices for supporting and engaging girls of color around these trends. - Partnered with Monica Montgomery City of San Diego Council District 4 to host a community screening of the PUSHOut: Criminalization of Black Girls by Monique Morris - raising awareness on issues pertaining to girls of color in education. - Our Executive Director, Tinesia Conwright, was accepted into two leadership programs. One local, RISE San Diego. One National, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. In addition, she facilitated workshops at the African American Opportunity Summit hosted by the San Diego Unified School District and the Opportunity Summit hosted by the San Diego Workforce Partnership. She also was the recipient of the following: Moxie Award, National Council of Negro Women Community Service Award, Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins Womens Month Recognition.
