Friends of Balboa Park (FoBP) was founded in 1999 by a group of dedicated community volunteers and is committed to ensuring the 1,200 acres that encompass San Diegos historic Balboa Park (the Park) are nothing less than magnificent. FoBPs efforts complement those of the City of San Diego and the Parks resident institutions, collaborating on preserving the Parks rich heritage, improving access, laying the foundation for a sustainable future, and advocating for community support. FoBP connects the community to projects that make a positive and meaningful difference for the Park, with a commitment to the same civic-minded philanthropy that motivated the Parks earliest stewards.FoBP engages in capital improvements of diverse types and public programs for all demographics that raise the Parks profile in the community. In 2017, FoBP acquired and assumed operations of the historic 1910 Herschell-Spillman menagerie carousel which further enhances FoBPs profile in the Park and the San Diego community and the ability to perform its mission.
