Organizations Filed Purposes:
Playwrights Projects mission is to empower individuals of all ages and backgrounds to voice stories through theatre, inspiring individual growth and creating meaningful community connections.
Teaching Programs 705 students and 40 teachers across San Diego County received instruction in playwriting, strengthening skills in written and verbal communication and creative expression, and promoting theatre as a tool for education and community building. 444 individuals attended introductory performances or culminating performances of participants plays.
Production Play Festival Our professional production of the 35th season of the Plays by Young Writers Festival presented 4 winning scripts from our California Young Playwrights Contest at Joan Kroc Theatre. Three plays by writers age 15 to 18 were fully produced, and one play by writers age 11-12 were staged readings. Three performances were weekday matinees for school groups and one performance was attended by the general public for a total of 1,255. Another 51 individuals attended informal readings of the plays.
Out of the Yard Arts in Corrections program 347 currently or formerly incarcerated adults wrote plays from their personal stories during workshops or commissions writers scripts were performed for 472 audience members inside facilities and out in the public including SDSU online production due to COVID, encouraging communication, building self efficacy, inspiring creativity, advancing literacy skills, honoring the resilience of the human spirit, and educating the general public about life in the correctional system.
