DISSEMINATE KNOWLEDGE AND ENCOURAGE STUDY OF MINEROLOGY, LAPIDARY AND EARTH SCIENCES.
LAPIDARY SCHOOL: A TOTAL OF TWENTY ONE VOLUNTEER INSTRUCTORS, AND A LIKE NUMBER OF VOLUNTEER ASSISTANT INSTRUCTORS, HELD 27 THREE-HOUR OR LONGER CLASSES PER WEEK, FOR APPROXIMATELY 185 STUDENTS PER WEEK. INCLUDES CABOCHON MAKING; FACETING OF GEMSTONES; BEGINNING SILVER FABRICATION OF JEWLERY; INTERMEDIATE SILVER FABRICATION; ADVANCED SILVER FABRICATION; CHASING AND REPOSSE; ENAMELING; METAL CASTING; ROCK CARVING; SPHERE MAKING; WIRE WRAP AND WIRE WORK JEWLERY; DESCRIPTIVE MINEROLOGY; AND A SPECIAL CLASS FOR JUNIORS AGE 9-17. DUE TO COVID ALL CLASSES WERE CANCELLED FROM MARCH 14 THROUGH MAY 31, 2020.SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP MEETINGS: FIVE MEETINGS WERE HELD DURING THE YEAR ON A VARIETY OF TOPICS RELATED TO GEMS, MINERALS, FOSSILS, JEWELRY AND OTHER INTERESTS. ALL MEETINGS WERE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC, WITH AND ATTENDANCE RANGING FROM 25 TO 50 PEOPLE PER MEETING. DUE TO COVID ALL MEETINGS IN MARCH APRIL AND MAY WERE CANCELLED.VISITS, LECTURES, SAMPLES: APPROX. 1500 CHILDREN AND TEACHERS FROM PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SCHOOLS TOURSED THE SOCIAETY MUSEUM AND LAPIDARY SCHOOL. LECTURES AND ROCKS WERE PROVIDED FOR FREE UPON REQUEST. BOXED MINERAL SPECIMEN SETS AND BUCKETS OF OTHER SAMPLES OF MATERIALS, ROCKS AND GEMS WERE PROVIDED TO ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TEACHERS FOR FREE, UPON REQUEST. DUE TO COVID THE SOCIAETY MUSEUM AND LAPIDARY SCHOOL WERE CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC FROM MARCH 14 THROUGH MAY 31, 2020 AND NO SCHOOL TOURS WERE PERMITTED.TOURS & SPECIMEN ID: SEVERAL SOCIETY VOLUNTERRS GAVE 2-4 TOURS WEEKLY TO MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL PUBLIC INTERESTED IN TOURING THE LAPIDARY CLASSROOMS AND SEEING STUDENTS WORK ON PROJECTS. MINERAL, GEM, LAPIDARY, AND METEORITE SPECIMENS WERE IDENTIFIED FOR FREE. DUE TO COVIDE THE SOCIETY THE SOCIETY MUSEUM AND LAPIDARY SCHOOL WERE CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC FROM MARCH 14 THROUGH MAY 31, 2020 AND NO PRIVATE TOURS WERE GIVEN.DECEMBER NIGHTS OPEN HOUSE: HELD AT THE SDMG BUILDING, FOR TWO DAYS IN DECEMBER. FREE SDMG MUSEUM WAS OPEN EXTENDED HOURS FROM 9AM TO 11PM. DOCENTS ANSWERED QUESTIONS ABOUT MUSEUM EXHIBITS, AND DEMONSTRATIONS IN EVERY CLASSROOM SHOWED OFF LAPIDARY, METALSMITHING, SPHERE MAKING, LOST WAX CASTING, AND FACETING TECHNIQUES. DONATED MINERAL, FOSSIL AND LAPIDARY SPECIMENS, AS WELL AS BOOKS AND MAGAZINES, WERE FOR SALE TO THE PUBLIC AT LOW COST. ADMISSION AND PARKING FREE.ANNUAL SAN DIEGO COUNTY FAIR - GEMS, MINERALS, FOSSILS & JEWELRY DEPT:HELD AT THE DEL MAR FAIRGOUNDS FROM MAY 31 THROUGH JULY 4, 2019. COORDINATOR, ASST COORDINATOR AND FIVE DEPARTMENTAL STAFF WERE MEMBERS OF THE SAN DIEGO MINERAL AND GEM SOCIETY. MUSEUM QUALITY EXHIBIT FEATURED OVER 360 COMPETITIVE AND SPECIAL ENTRIES, AS WELL AS 7 MINERAL AND GEM DEALERS. STAFF HANDLED ALL ASPECTS OF THE SET UP, INTAKE OF EXHIBITS, JUDGING, ONGOING MAINTENENCE, DOCENT TOURS, SCHEDULING OF DEMONSTRATIONS AND FREE GEM ID, VOLUNTEERS, EXHIBIT GIVEBACK, AND TAKEDOWN. VOLUNTEER DEMONSTRATORS FROM SAN DIEGO MINERAL AND GEM, AS WELL AS OTHER ROCK CLUBS, ANSWERED FAIRGOERS QUESTIONS WHILE SHOWING OFF THE SKILLS NECESSARY TO POLISH ROCKS, MAKE SILVER CHAINS, FACET GEMSTONES, SELECT AND KNAP OBSIDIAN, MAKE POLISHED ROCK SPERES, CARVE ROCK IN TO MINATURE SCULPTURES, IDENTIFY GEMSTONES AND MINERALS, AND SIMILAR ACTIVITEIS. ATTENDANCE AT FAIR REACHED 1,530,000+ IN 2019; APPROXIMATELY 500,000 FAIRGOERS WERE ESTIAMTED TO HAVE TOURED THE GEMS AND MINERAL DEPARTMENT EXHIBIT HALL FOR AN OUTSTANDING EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE AVAILABLE NOWHERE ELSE IN SAN DIEGO COUNTY.
