Organizations Filed Purposes:
TO STRENGTHEN THE SYSTEM OF FIRE AND EMERGENCY SERVICES IN SAN DIEGO COUNTY. THE FOUNDATION SEEKS STRONG & EFFECTIVE EMERGENCY SERVICES TO PROVIDE QUALITY FIRE PROTECTION AND EMERGENCY SERVICES THROUGHOUT SAN DIEGO COUNTY; TO GIVE FIRE AND EMERGENCY SERVICE PROVIDERS ACCESS TO BASIC EQUIPMENT, TRAINING AND TRAINING MATERIALS; TO FACILITATE MULTI-JURISDICTIONAL COORDINATION AND COOPERATION; AND TO EDUCATE CITIZENS ABOUT FIRE PREPAREDNESS & SAFETY PRECAUTIONS THEY CAN TAKE & ABOUT THE SYSTEM OF FIRE & EMERGENCY SERVICES.
IMPROVE THE SYSTEM OF FIRE & EMERGENCY SERVICES IN SAN DIEGO COUNTY BY PROVIDING FIRE, MEDICAL AND COMMUNICATION EQUIPMENT AND TRAINING; EDUCATE CITIZENS ABOUT FIRE SAFETY AND PREPAREDNESS; FACILITATE MULTI-JURISDICTIONAL COORDINATION AND COOPERATION; AND INCREASE PUBLIC AWARENESS OF FIRE & SAFETY ISSUES.
WITH THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC IN 2020, THE FOUNDATION DEDICATED MUCH OF ITS ENERGY PROVIDING FOR THE SAFETY OF OUR FIREFIGHTERS AND THE PATIENTS THEY SERVE. IF FIREFIGHTERS BECOME ILL WITH THE COVID VIRUS, THEY MUST QUARANTINE THEMSELVES. THIS EITHER LEADS TO FIRE STATIONS SHUTTING DOWN DUE TO LACK OF FIREFIGHTERS OR MORE OVERTIME PAY. WITH TRAVEL AND RESTAURANT RESTRICTIONS, ALL FIRE DEPARTMENTS ARE FACING LOWER SALES AND OCCUPANCY TAXES, WHICH LIMITS OVERTIME PAY AND THE PURCHASE OF NEEDED EQUIPMENT. THE FOUNDATION RESPONDED BY RAISING FUNDS FOR FIREFIGHTERS TO GET MORE SAFETY EQUIPMENT TO PROTECT THEM FROM VIRUS, BLOOD AND CHEMICALS; PLUS SANITATION EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES TO KEEP THEIR MEDICAL EQUIPMENT, AMBULANCES, AND FIRE STATIONS CLEAN. EVEN WORSE THAN A FIREFIGHTER BECOMING ILL, WOULD BE THE VIRUS SPREADING FROM PATIENT TO PATIENT.
TO PROVIDE THE BASIC FIRE AND MEDICAL EQUIPMENT AND TRAINING NEEDED BY FIREFIGHTERS, THE FOUNDATION CONDUCTS AN ANNUAL GRANT PROGRAM FOR FIRE DEPARTMENTS IN SAN DIEGO COUNTY SERVING MOSTLY RURAL OR LOW-INCOME COMMUNITIES WHERE THE TAX BASE IS NOT SUFFICIENT TO ENABLE THE ACQUISITION OF NEEDED EQUIPMENT AND TRAINING. THE FOUNDATIONS'S GOAL IS FOR ALL RESIDENTS TO HAVE THE SAME LEVEL OF SERVICE WITHOUT REGARD TO WHERE THEY LIVE AND TO STRENGTHEN THE WEAKEST LINK IN OUR COUNTY'S SYSTEM OF EMERGENCY FIRE AND EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES. THIS IS PARTICULARLY NEEDED WHEN WE EXPERIENCE WILDFIRES WHICH ARE COMMON IN OUR AREA DUE TO ARID CONDITIONS, STRONG WINDS, STEEP ROUGH TERRAIN AND HEAVY FUEL. ALL DEPARTMENTS MUST BE ABLE TO WORK TOGETHER IN A HIGHLY COORDINATED MANNER DURING THESE FIRES, WE CANNOT AFFORD TO HAVE A WEAK LINK.
AS A RESULT OF MAJOR WILDFIRES WHICH DEVASTATED MUCH OF THE COUNTY IN 2003 AND 2007, THE SAN DIEGO COUNTY FIRE AUTHORITY WAS FORMED TO CONSOLIDATE ALL VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENTS AND SOME PARTIALLY PAID RURAL FIRE DEPARTMENTS INTO A CONSOLIDATED ENTITY OVERSEEN CAL FIRE FROM AN OPERATIONAL PERSPECTIVE. TO HELP INSURE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THIS NEW ENTITY WITH 42 FIRE STATIONS, THE FOUNDATION HAS BEEN WORKING TO MAKE SURE ALL DEPARTMENTS HAVE THE SAME LEVEL OF COMMUNICATION EQUIPMENT TO EXPEDITE DISPATCHING, REDUCE RESPONSE TIMES, UP-TO-DATE MAPPING, AND DETAILED COMMUNITY EVACUATION PLANS. THUS THE FOUNDATION LOOKS AT BOTH INDIVIDUAL FIRE DEPARTMENT NEEDS AND REGIONAL NEEDS TO HELP MAKE SAN DIEGO THE "SAFETY COUNTY IN AMERICA".
