VIA GLOBAL EDUCATION CREATES OPPORTUNITIES TO LEARN FROM LOCAL LEADERS AND ENGAGE DIRECTLY IN THE WORK OF DEVELOPING SELF AND SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES. THIS YEAR 1,100 VOLUNTEERS PARTICIPATED, LEARNING AND CONTRIBUTING 4,400 HOURS OF SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITIES WE SERVE.NOTE: TO CREATE LONG TERM SUSTAINABILITY OF THE ORGANIZATION, THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS INVESTED RESERVE FUNDS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF A SELF-SUSTAINING MODEL OF VOLUNTEERISM. THIS PROGRAM INVESTMENT CALLED FOR DEFICIT SPENDING 2012-2019.

VIA BORDERLANDS INSTITUTE CREATES OPPORTUNITIES FOR LEARNING THROUGH SOCIAL JUSTICE ENGAGEMENT IN THE SAN DIEGO/TIJUANA BORDER REGION. WITH 45 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE IN COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT, THE ORGANIZATION NOW SUPPORTS MULTIPLE COMMUNITY INITIATIVES IN THE SAN DIEGO/TIJUANA BORDER REGION WHERE WE ARE BASED. WE SPONSORED PUBLIC COMMUNITY EVENTS WITH PARTICIPATION OF 25,000 AND CONDUCTED A PROGRAM FOR HOMELESS YOUTH FOCUSED ON ART/CONFLICT RESOLUTION/COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT.

VIA COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT FOSTERS LEADERSHIP FOR THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF COMMUNITIES IN THE CALIFORNIA/BAJA BORDER REGION, MEXICO, CENTRAL AMERICA AND BEYOND. KEY INITIATIVES INCLUDE: A) COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP EDUCATION. TRAINS COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO ASSESS COMMUNITY NEEDS, ORGANIZE RESIDENTS, IMPLEMENT COMMUNITY-DEFINED PROJECTS AND PROMOTE SELF-RELIANCE. SEVEN GENERATIONS OF GRADUATES HAVE RECEIVED A UNIVERSITY CREDENTIAL. OF THE 400 GRADUATES MANY ARE EMPLOYED BY NON-PROFITS, SUPPORTING COMMUNITY INITIATIVES OR MANAGING THEIR OWN ENTERPRISES.B) FAMILY HEALTH/FOOD SECURITY. PROVIDES NUTRITION AND ECOLOGY CLASSES. FAMILIES BENEFIT WITH A LOWER FOOD BUDGET AND IMPROVED FOOD CHOICE. ORGANIC GARDENS ARE ESTABLISHED. THIS YEAR 1,041 CHILDREN, 200 PARENTS PARTICIPATED. 16,650 MEALS SERVED IN SCHOOLS.C) MICRO ENTERPRISE PROVIDES LOANS TO START-UP ENTERPRISES THAT ENABLE PARTICIPANTS TO DEVELOP FINANCIAL STABILITY. THREE HUNDRED THIRTEEN (313) COMMUNITY LOANS WERE PROVIDED IN THE AMOUNT OF $193,892. LOAN REPAYMENT WAS 100%.D) SCHOOL ENHANCEMENT - SUPPORTED INFRASTRUCTURE ENHANCEMENT IN TWO SCHOOLS IN THE GUATEMALAN HIGHLANDS. INSTALLED A RAINWATER HARVESTING SYSTEM IN A SCHOOL IN XOCHIMILCO, MEXICO CITY.
