Organizations Filed Purposes:
Our mission is empower women with tools to work their way out of poverty, care for their families, and strengthen their communities. In partnership with high-impact non-profit organizations, Women's Empowerment (WE) funds small business loans, training, education, and other innovative poverty alleviation strategies for impoverished women. WE also serves its member constituency by offering education, engagement opportunities, and the chance to support a portfolio of carefully-researched, impactful poverty-alleviation programs benefiting vulnerable women and families.
Business services and entrepreneurship training for refugee, immigrant and low-income women in San Diego enrolled in the WE STAR Program through grants to the International Rescue Committee in San Diego. In 2020, the program enrolled 95 women clients and provided training sessions to about 480 women. The clients started 20 businesses and strengthened or expanded 44 businesses. An estimated 80 jobs were created from these activities.
Grants to Nyaka Global provided funds for loans for poor grandmothers who are each raising and supporting an average of six grandchildren in conditions of dire poverty. In 2020, WE funds supported loans to an estimated 13 grandmother groups averaging $2,300 each and benefitting approximately 1100 grandmothers. $10,000 was provided for administrative staff salaries and an additional $3,000 covered the cost of 244 water harvesting tanks for collection of fresh drinking water near grandmother dwellings.
Grants to the Adelante Foundation provided small business loans and business training to poor women in Honduras to start or strengthen their businesses. In 2020, WE funds supported about $15,000 in group solidarity loans to women entrepreneurs, averaging $385 each. $5,000 was used toward education loans to cover school fees; $20,000 in home improvement loans and business training for clients.
