Organizations Filed Purposes:
Supporting students ages 6 to 18 with their writing skills & helping teachers get students excited about writing. We advocate that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success & that great leaps in learning can be made when skilled tutors work one-on-one with students.
In-School Programs: 826 Valencia partners with public schools throughout San Francisco to collaboratively develop writing curricula. We also bring teams of 826 staff and volunteer tutors to partner schools where we support students 1:1 with writing projects. In FY20, we supported 38 teachers and 1,516 students at 11 schools, beginning onsite and moving online in spring 2020 due to COVID-19. We are proud of three new partnerships we established with elementary schools in 2019, which we visited weekly throughout the year to help 3rd-graders with writing. Another highlight was our Young Authors Book Project in spring 2020. We worked intensely with 2 classes at Mission High. Students examined work by American poet Nikky Finney and worked with 826 staff and tutors to craft literary responses to her work. We published their work in a book entitled, "The Freedom to Live Without Fear."
Afterschool826 Valencia provides free after-school tutoring and writing support at four locations in San Francisco, including our three Writing Centers and our partner school, Buena Vista Horace Mann (BVHM). Students enroll for a minimum of two days per week for homework and individual support with reading and writing. Together, these programs served 180 students in 2019-2020. We celebrated our first full year of after-school programming at our Mission Bay Center, which serves students living in our building, a subsidized housing development for low-income and formerly homeless families. Another highlight from Fiscal Year 2020 was a festive, cake-themed writing project for our students at BVHM. In response to COVID-19, we migrated all programs online and continued working with students throughout the school year.
College Career Readiness:826 Valencia provides middle and high schoolers with opportunities to build skills, knowledge, networks, and resources that strengthen the high school-to-college-to-career pathway. In FY20, we awarded six 4-year $20,000 college scholarships to graduating seniors who will also receive ongoing college persistence and completion support through our partner organization, ScholarMatch. We provided another 200 12th-graders with college application essay support through multi-week online workshops with partner schools. Our Youth Leadership Advisory Board (YLAB) offered paid internships, leadership development, and career readiness support to 47 teens. We also provided hands-on work experience and stipends to 59 high school and college students and transitional aged youth (TAY) who interned with our education, volunteer, design, and store teams.
