Organizations Filed Purposes: Accountability Counsel amplifies the voices of communities around the world to protect their human rights and environment. As advocates for people harmed by internationally financed projects, we employ community driven and policy level strategies to access justice.

Communities Program: Advocates in our Communities team worked at the request of communities harmed by international investment to raise their grievances through use of accountability offices as part of broader campaigns for justice. Impacts include agreements reached peacefully through dialogue, remedy delivered to local people, and vindication of local peoples grievances through official findings of fact. Details in Schedule O.

Policy Advocacy Program: Our Policy team has advocated for stronger accountability offices, creation of new ones where there are gaps, and for lessons from cases to translate into systemic change so that communities can access justice and institutions can prevent harm. ACHIEVEMENTS IN THE FISCAL YEAR INCLUDE POLICY ADVOCACY LEADING TO CHANGES to ACCOUNTABILITY AT THE WORLD BANK; SUCCESSFUL ADVOCACY TO ENSURE THAT ACCOUNTABILITY POLICIES AT A NEW U.S. DEVELOPMENT FINANCE INSTITUTION ARE PUT INTO PRACTICE; CONTRIBUTING TO THE CREATION OF A NEW ACCOUNTABILITY FRAMEWORK FOR CHINESE BANKS INVESTING OVERSEAS THROUGH OUR PARTICIPATION IN A SERIES OF WORKSHOPS WITH CHINESE BANKERS AND REGULATORS; and advancing conversations around accountability mechanisms as key features of responsible finance, with a focus on impact investing AND climate FINANCE.

Research Program: Our Research team launched the Accountability Console, a public database of every publicly-recorded case ever filed to an accountability office. The Accountability Console also includes a tool to benchmark policies governing every aspect of the complaint process at each accountability office. Our analytics of this data set supported our policy advocacy at bilateral and multilateral institutions. OUR RESEARCH TEAM ALSO SUPPORTED RESEARCH and technology tools, INCLUDING for Community cases IN HAITI, UKRAINE, MONGOLIA, AND NEPAL, DESCRIBED ABOVE.
