Our Mission African-American Shakespeare's mission is to: Open the realm of classic theatre to a diverse audience; and Provide an opportunity and place for actors of color to hone their skills and talent in mastering some of the world's greatest classical roles. We carry out our mission; by, producing work from the cannon of classical theatre including Shakespeare and great American and world playwrights that is lively, entertaining, and relevant. Re-interpreting time-favored classics in a style that speaks to and embraces an African-American cultural aesthetic and identity. Offering training to developing actors to help them in their mastery of the language and style of the classics.
African-American Shakespeare Company was introduced in 1994 to open the realm of classic theatre to a diverse audience; and provide an opportunity and place for actors of color to hone their skills and talent in mastering some of the world's greatest classical roles. We do this by producing work from the canon of classical theatre including Shakespeare and great American and world playwrights that is lively, entertaining and relevant. We create theatrical experiences, which celebrate our pride, diversity and integrity. Our work has at its core an African-American aesthetic, steeped in an American sensibility, and a commitment to artistic and cultural experience. We value the ability to impart a theatrical knowledge base, teach style and content, and share classical repertoire to under-represented actors and diverse listening audiences.We build a sense of community with our audiences, artists, patrons, neighbors and collaborators and see each as essential stakeholders in our company.
Performances in 2019 included Black Eagles (April 2019) and Macbeth (June 2019); and Othello (October 2019); and Cinderella (December 2019). Arts Education Program of Shake-It-Up, free student matinee performances, and youth drama program with Middle and High Schools associated with JRAP and our own programming. Served 3,500 students.
