Organizations Filed Purposes:
Improving science literacy through education and public outreach programs advancing the public understanding in the science and study of astronomy since 1889; collecting and publishing information concerning the science of astronomy; defraying expenses of expeditions for the purpose of observing astronomical phenomena.
On-the-Spot Assessment is a research-to-practice initiative led by the ASP, in collaboration with Oregon State University, the Portal to the Public Network via the Institute for Learning Innovation, and the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO). Over four years, we are developing a set of embedded assessment strategies and professional development to support research scientists in effectively communicating science to the public.
CosmoQuest - "CosmoQuest: Engaging Students & the Public through a Virtual Research Facility" is a 4-year Cooperative Agreement with NASA led by the Society in collaboration with the McDonald Observatory at the University of Texas, the Planetary Science Institute, the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, the Youngstown State University - Ward Beecher Planetarium. This cooperative agreement funds the development of citizen science projects, and supports eductaional materials, as well as community projects. This program allows people of all backgrounds to learn science, and participate in a research community that advances NASA Science Mission Directorate (SMD) scientific endeavors, and thus increases the public's understanding of NASA's SMD science, and appreciation of the scientific process, while providing opportunities for them to interact with relevant subject matter experts.
The Astronomical Society of the Pacific offers several innovative educational programs which support astronomers, teachers, and other science educators.
