BATS Improv is dedicated to the performance, study, development, and promotion of improvisational theatre.
School: The BATS School of Improv teaches workshops for both actors and non-actors, teaching such skills as active listening, making one's partner look good, failing good-naturedly, and taking risks. In FY18-19 the BATS School of Improv offered more than 140 classes which served more than 1800 students, including introductory classes, our core curriculum of Foundation, Studio Scenework and performance classes, plus genre specialty, youth classes and summer intensives. BATS' Laughing Stock program provides free improvisation classes to people living with HIV, AIDS, Hepatitis C, Cancer and other chronic life-threatening illnesses (partners and caregivers are also welcome). During summer 2019 we launched the Diversity Scholarship to enable more students of color and diverse ethnic backgrounds to study at the BATS School of Improv.
Shows: BATS performers create over 100 completely improvised shows every year for over 7,000 audience members. In FY18-19, the BATS company developed a wide range of new show formats including Crazy in Love, Shakespeare's Unknown Canon and A Moveable Feast (a cabaret of improvised stories inspired by improvised songs set in a 1920's Paris nightclub). The organization also performed classic formats such as our signature Theatresports (in a special edition themed Corporate Sellout) and Super Scene. BATS also welcomed guests to join us on stage in new formats such as Theater Over the Edge, The Bechdel Test and The Gather, featuring storytellers from The Moth and the Stanford Storytelling Project.
Corporate: Through its Improv@work training programs, BATS brought events to the workplace, or coworkers to our theater, to immerse themselves in fun activities that contribute to better collaboration and communication. This year, the Improv@Work program reached clients in a variety of business sectors and conducted over 106 distinct Improv@Work sessions
