Organizations Filed Purposes:
BAYCAT exists to end racial, gender and economic inequity by creating powerful, authentic media while diversifying the creative industry. Through the education and employment of low-income youth, young people of color, and young women in the Bay Area, and producing media for socially-minded clients, we are changing the stories that get shared with the world.
In 2019, BAYCAT served 174 unduplicated low-income youth, young people of color, and young women in total. We offered three cohorts of filmmaking and graphic arts/animation classes after school and over the summer to 69 youth through our Academy, and also delivered our Workshop on Wheels program to 54 young people. We created 51 jobs and paid internships for high schoolers and young adults. As of March 2020, approximately 75% of our spring 2019 intern graduates and 58% of our fall graduates have been placed in media-related employment. Our youth produced 3 episodes of the award-winning series "Zoom In" that was premiered to live public audiences at local cultural institutions. Youths' media productions were also featured at film festivals including SF Indie Film Fest, Dances with Kidz, SF International Film Fest, Cine Las Americas Film Festival, All American High School Film Festival, My Hero Film Festival, and Cine + Mas SF Latino. Our Studio produced media for 17 community partners, including nonprofits, philanthropy, and local government agencies.
