The BioBricks Foundation (BBF) is a public benefit organization whose mission is to ensure that the engineering of biology is conducted in an ethical and open manner to benefit all people and the planet.
Biological & Life Sciences Research: BioBricks Foundation, Inc. (BBF) was established to foster and advance innovation, research, standardization, and education in synthetic biology through open design, construction, distribution, understanding, and use of BioBrick parts, namely standardized genetic materials and associated functional information, in ways that benefit science, healthcare, and society worldwide. BBF developed a BioBricks Public Agreement in both a Contributor and User form to encourage the contribution and use of standardized biological parts. In addition to educational activities, BBF also was a lead organization in the launch of the BIOFAB, a consortium of research institutions which have a synthetic biology lab at the Joint Bioenergy Institute in Emeryville, CA. BBF administers OpenWetWare, an online community of synthetic biology researchers and labs which fosters greater communication and sharing of information and resources, and educational opportunity, via the internet. BBF is also designing, prototyping and launching the "bionet", an open technology platform for peer-to-peer exchange and provenance tracking of biomaterials and associated data.
