Organizations Filed Purposes: We apply the spirit of innovation to empower neighborhoods to fund, build, and maintain great public spaces.

The Build Public Place Program brings together civic stakeholders, infill developers, and creative public private finance to fund, design and build new parks, plazas and other public open spaces that might otherwise be abandoned for lack of vision and creativity. Build Public partners with neighborhoods, cities, developers and foundations to fund and build great public spaces. Successful public spaces improve quality of life by bringing people to nature and to one another.

Build Public's Stewardship program area: Without proper management, an urban public space can suffer from neglect, vandalism, and misuse. In order to prevent a public plaza, park or playground from becoming a detriment to its surrounding neighborhood, an enduring local stewardship entity must exist to fund and manage ongoing care of the space. For example, Build Public's innovative Green Benefits District GBD program helps communities launch a new type of neighborhood-based-controlled assessment district to fund enhanced maintenance for parks, gardens, and green spaces, above and beyond existing baseline services provided by the city. GBDs help address the issue of increased intensity of use due to compact development, at a strategic neighborhood scale. They can also provide seed capital to leverage investment in new neighborhood open space.
