Organizations Filed Purposes: THE MISSION OF THE CALIFORNIA FOUNDATION ON THE ENVIRONMENT AND THE ECONOMY IS TO BRING TOGETHER LEADERSHIP FROM THE BUSINESS, LABOR, LOCAL GOVERNMENT, AND ENVIRONMENTAL COMMUNITY WITH ELECTED AND APPOINTED OFFICIALS IN ROUNDTABLE FORUMS CONCERNING FUNDAMENTAL ENVIRONMENTAL AND ECONOMIC INFRASTRUCTURE ISSUES IN CALIFORNIA. THE PARTICIPANTS ENGAGE IN BOTH CONFERENCES AND ON TRAVEL MISSIONS FOCUSED ON EDUCATING AND DEVELOPING CONSENSUS ON COMPLEX YET CRITICAL ISSUES OF THE DAY. THE ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSIONS ARE DESIGNED TO MAXIMIZE THE EXCHANGE OF INFORMATION AND DIALOGUE TO LEARN AND IDEALLY FIND COMMON GROUND ON THE COMPLEX TRADEOFFS INVOLVED IN IMPLEMENTING THE WIDE VARIETY OF PUBLIC POLICY OPTIONS.WORKING WITH MEMBERS OF OUR LARGE AND DIVERSE BOARD OF DIRECTORS, PROJECT PARTICIPANTS, AND ELECTED OFFICIALS, CFEE MONITORS THE MAJOR ISSUES RELATED TO ENERGY, WATER, HOUSING, TRANSPORTATION, AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS AND TECHNOLOGY.

CFEE CONDUCTS PUBLIC POLICY DISCUSSION FORUMS TO FACILITATE A FREE AND OPEN EXCHANGE OF VIEWS BETWEEN TOP REGULATORY AND ELECTED OFFICIALS, INDUSTRY EXECUTIVES, LABOR,CONSUMER, ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERS, AND ACADEMIC EXPERTS. CONFERENCE TOPICS IN 2019 INCLUDED:HOUSING CONFERENCETHIS CONFERENCE CONFRONTED AND CHRONICLED THE SERIOUS CHALLENGES WRAPPED IN THE SIGNIFICANT HOUSING SHORTAGE. WE EXAMINED THE VARIETY OF CAUSES FOR LACK OF AFFORDABLE BUILDING OPTIONS, RELUCTANCE OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT IN PURSUING LARGE SCALE DEVELOPMENTS, DIFFICULTIES IN FUNDING AND PRIORITIZING THE CONSTRUCTION WORKER PIPELINE, AND EVER INCREASING NEED FOR GOVERNMENT SUBSIDIES TO PROVIDE FINANCING. LASTLY, THE INTERPLAY BETWEEN TRANSPORTATION AVAILABILITY FOR RESIDENTS AND THE NEED TO INCREASE HOUSING SITING NEAR TRANSIT WAS A MAJOR DISCUSSION SUBJECT.ENERGY CONFERENCETHIS CONFERENCE FOCUSED ON THE MANY PATHWAYS NEED FOR CALIFORNIA TO REACH CARBON NEUTRALITY. WITH AN EYE TO CURRENT AND PAST STRATEGIES, THE DISCUSSION EXAMINED A WIDE VARIETY OF EFFORTS IN TRANSPORTATION, CALIFORNIA'S MAJOR OIL AND GAS SECTORS, THE ROLE OF OUR STATE'S REGULATORS, AND THE SHIFTING SOURCES OF ENERGY FOR RESIDENTS AND BUSINESSES.TELECOMMUNICATION AND TECHNOLOGY CONFERENCETHIS CONFERENCE ACKNOWLEDGED THE INCREASING ROLE OF BOTH TELECOMMUNICATIONS AND TECHNOLOGY IN OUR PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL LIVES AND THE URGENT NEED TO ENSURE THEY ARE BOTH PUT IN SERVICE OF US AND NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND. THE RAPID DEPLOYMENT AND ADVANCES IN WIRELESS, CABLE, AND BROADBAND ARE DRIVING EVER GREATER DEVELOPMENT OF GROUNDBREAKING TECHNOLOGIES WITH COMMENSURATE EXPANDING SPEED. AN EXAMINATION OF APPLICABILITY TO CLIMATE CHANGE, TRANSPORTATION AND CARBON REDUCTION WAS A SOURCE OF SERIOUS DISCUSSION. ADDED TO THE CONFERENCE WAS THE IMPACT OF OUR STATE'S EXTREME WILDFIRES AND THE INTERPLAY WITH BOTH ENDANGERED INFRASTRUCTURE AND HOW THIS SAME TECHNOLOGY COULD HELP MITIGATE THE DESTRUCTION AND ENDANGERMENT TO LIFE AND WHOLE COMMUNITIES. A TIMELY FORUM ON THE JUST TRANSITION OF WORKER IN THE GIG ECONOMY AND THE IMPACT ON THE CASH ECONOMY ROUNDED OUT A SERIES OF THROUGHTFULPRESENTATIONS FOR THE PARTICIPANTS.WATER CONFERENCETHIS CONFERENCE FOCUSED ON THE COMPLEXITIES IN BUILDING A RESILIENT AND RELIABLE WATER SYSTEM IN A TIME OF GROWING WATER SCARCITY AND THE UNCERTAINTIES OF HOW CLIMATE CHANGE IS IMPACTING THE WHOLE WATER SYSTEM. THE INTERPLAY WITH HOUSING WAS EXAMINED INCLUDING THE METHODS FOR FORECASTING AND MEETING WATER DEMANDS. THE GROWING UNDERSTANDING AND ACCURACY IN ASSESSING WATER QUALITY PROVIDED OUR PRESENTERS THE OPPORTUNITY TO EDUCATE OUR PARTICIPANTS AND POSE THE THOUGHTFUL POLICY OPTIONS CREATED WITH THE NEW KNOWLEDGE. LASTLY THE EVER PRESENT ISSUE OF THE BAY DELTA AND NORTH-SOUTH WATER CONVEYANCE SYSTEMS PUT IN SHARP VIEW THE NEEDS FOR INCREASING WATER SYSTEM RESILIENCY WHILE ATTEMPTING TO KNOW AND BALANCE THE MANDATED NEEDS OF THE ENVIRONMENT, PEOPLE, AND BUSINESS.
