LIBRARY SERVICES & CollectionsTHE CURRENT CHS HEADQUARTERS ACCOMMODATE THE ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICES, NORTH BAKER RESEARCH LIBRARY, COLLECTIONS STORAGE VAULTS, MUSEUM GALLERIES, AND RETAIL SPACE. SERVING AN AVERAGE OF OVER 3,200 PEOPLE A YEAR. THE NORTH BAKER RESEARCH LIBRARY PROVIDES PUBLIC ACCESS TO ONE OF THE FOUR PREMIER COLLECTIONS OF ORIGINAL MATERIALS ON CALIFORNIA HISTORY IN THE STATE. AS OF June 2015, CHS COLLECTION HOLDINGS ARE ESTIMATED AT OVER 50,000 VOLUMES OF BOOKS AND PAMPHLETS, 4,000 MANUSCRIPT COLLEC- TIONS, AND SOME 500,000 PHOTOGRAPHIC IMAGES, CHIEFLY FROM THE NINETEENTH AND EARLY TWENTIETH CENTURY. Exhibitions and ProgramsCHS shares its collections through an exhibition gallery in the heart of the Yerba Buena district, and through year-round public programming, in addition to its free public library. In recent years, exhibitions and related programming have stressed partnerships with a wide variety of nontraditional cultural and social service community organizations that have deepened the historical dimensions of its presentations and introduced history to extensive nontraditional audiences.Recent exhibits include: Alexander Hamilton: Treasures from the New York Historical Society; Meanwhile out West Colonizing California 1769-1821; !Murales Rebeldes! Member services and PublicationsCHS members receive discounts on Ten Lions Book Store purchases, free admission to exhibitions at the CHS Gallery in San Francisco, a 40% discount in individual subscriptions to California History, published by UC Press, and one free book from a selection curated by CHS CEO Dr. Anthea Hartig. At the Ally level and above members receive reciprocal admissions at other participating cultural institutions. CHS established the California Historical Society Book Award in 2013 for a book-length manuscript that makes an important contribution to both scholarship and to the greater community by deepening public understanding of some aspect of California History. Five books have been published under this program in collaboration with Heyday.
