Organizations Filed Purposes: To increase the public's understanding and appreciation of contemporary chamber music and make this art form more accessible through the Del Sol String Quartet's concerts, commissioning of composers, recordings and educational outreach.

Concert Performances: In 2019 Del Sol performed nearly 50 different compositions (including 14 world premieres) at 19 public concerts, 6 house concerts, and 5 educational outreach events in the San Francisco Bay Area, other parts of CA and in 7 other states, reaching thousands of audience members. Significant performances included: 1) the "2nd Annual Turkish Music Festival" in Houston, TX, co-presented by Rice University's Shepherd School of Music and the Asia Society; 2) "Illuminations" at University of CA, Irvine, premiering several new works by Persian (Iranian-American) composers; 3) Del Sol's self-presented "Pacific Pythagorean Music Festival" in San Francisco, featuring new works in just intonation with 10 guest artists; 4) the "April in Santa Cruz Contemporary Music Festival" at University of CA, Santa Cruz, premiering 4 new works; 5) with Gamelan Pacifica in Seattle, WA, premiering a new work for gamelan and string quartet; 6) the Victoria Bach Festival in Goliad and Edna, TX; and 7) in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, NM, in connection with Santa Fe Opera's production of "Thirteenth Child" by Poul Ruders.

Commissioning of Composers: Del Sol's significant commissioning activities in 2019 included: 1) continuation of two multi-year, collaborative projects to create new works: a) with Chinese-American composer Huang Ruo, who is composing an oratorio for string quartet and chorus exploring the history of discriminatory immigration practices and detention of immigrants on Angel Island during the years of the Chinese Exclusion Act; and b) with composer-musicians Alam Khan, Arjun Verma and other artists to co-create a series of ensemble works for string quartet and traditional instruments, written in the style of North Indian classical music; and 2) holding a nationwide emerging composer commissioning competition for string quartets written in just intonation, attracting nearly 50 submissions from which Del Sol selected Korean-American composer Jung Yoon Wie.

Educational Outreach: In 2019, Del Sol's significant educational outreach activities included: 1) two self-presented chamber music coaching programs in San Francisco--QuartetFest for middle and high school string players in June; and ChamberFest for adult non-professionals in February; 2) a 3-day residency at University of CA, Irvine, reading, performing and recording new works by seven graduate composition students; 3) a weeklong residency at University of CA, Santa Cruz at which Del Sol lectured at the opening colloquium, and workshopped and performed pieces by four student composers; 4) a weeklong practice residency at Avaloch Farm Music Institute in NH; and 5) the opening event in a 10-part interdisciplinary arts and music program for 4th graders at a San Francisco public elementary school, in collaboration with a visual artist/teacher, exploring immigration, family history and cultural diversity in connection with our Angel Island project.
