Organizations Filed Purposes: Girls on the Run of the Bay Area inspires girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.

Girls on the Run of the Bay Area had the following program accomplishments in FY20Girls served: Girls on the Run of the Bay Area served 870 girls in Fall 2019, and 941 for Spring 2020 in five Bay Area counties.Programs: The organization offered the program in 155 sites - 63 sites in the Fall and 92 sites in the Spring. Recruitment was cut short due to the pandemic. Girls were served in the following counties: 20% in Alameda County, 23% in Contra Costa County, 9% in Marin, 28% in SF County and 20% in San Mateo County.Financial Aid: 67% of the girls received financial assistance to participate in Fall 2019 and Spring 2020 programs this amounted to 1,166 girls receiving scholarships. 107 pairs of new running shoes were donated to girls who did not have a good pair of sneakers for Fall. Due to the pandemic, running shoes were not distributed in the Spring. Community Support: We enjoyed over 1,563 volunteers helping the program be a success: 498 coaches, 25 associate board members, 250 committee/event coordinators, 790 Running Buddies/Supporters for the Fall 5K in-person, and a smaller showing for the Spring Virtual 5K due to the inability to gather in large numbers. Completion of the Program: With small team sizes (a ratio of 3 adult coaches to 15 girls on the team), the GOTRBA program has a high completion rate. 98% of girls completed the season and 95% of girls attended the Girls on the Run 5K in Golden Gate Park with their team in the Fall. We conducted a Virtual 5K in the Spring, with 222 girls and families registered. Participation was high and all the girls who participated crossed the finish line. GOTR also encourages our alumnae network to participate both as junior coaches and mentors to our girls. Many of our junior coaches are former GOTRBA alumnae. We also focus on our girls future goals and leadership qualities and with that in mind, we developed an intensive leadership training program for our alumnae in the Fall of 2019 with a top global management consulting company. We will continue to do this to grow and nurture our GOTR graduates.Girls on the Run program conducts surveys after every season. The feedback continues to be very positive. For the Fall, 100% of the girls participating in the Girls on the Run 5K reached their goal of finishing the run. Many of the girls ran it as a race, and others enjoyed the event as a celebration and culmination of all their learning from the 20 sessions in the program. The goal is to engage girls in exercise early, making it fun, not competitive or intimidating. 94.9% of the parents stated the family joined in the 5K celebration in Golden Gate Park (ran/trained with their daughter or was fairly involved). There was a significant increase in the girls' positive attitudes towards exercise: (70.6% post-season vs. 58.4% pre-season), and a significant increase in increased level of activity for the girls (74.8% post vs. 66% pre-season). There was a 6% increase in I am good at most physical activities a lift that indicates girls are embracing activity and gaining in confidence51% of girls stated I am happy with the way I am a 3.5% increase vs pre-season; Importantly, there was a 13.3% increase in the agree/strongly agree of I participate in activities that help my community. Overall, the post-season parent surveys confirmed that Girls on the Run helped their daughters form healthy habits such as healthy friendships and a healthy attitude about themselves. GOTR was a fantastic program! I would love for my daughter to participate againCoaches and girls on the run are very niceCoaching was excellent"GOTR was hard for my daughter. Faces were new and the activity (running) was not something she did. By the end, she did not want to miss a practice. After the last meeting, she said 'I am proud of myself.'""My daughter can now function as a trainer for me! She's very skilled at encouraging me and pacing my efforts."Girl participant quotes:"Girls on the run as taught me how to control my anger, and being even more kind to friends and participate more in class." Since finishing GOTR, I have continued running and grew to love it! At GOTR, I learned to have a healthy lifestyle.Because of Girls on the Run my next goal is to keep on running, stay positive, and do my best.GOTR has taught me to make my friends and others happy and myself.
