Organizations Filed Purposes:
The purpose of Global Energy Monitor is to develop shared information resources in support of the worldwide citizens movement to address the impacts of fossil fuels and move to clean energy sources.
Coal-Global Energy Monitor's coal program includes wiki-based information, a global coal plant database, a global coal mine database, a global coal public finance database, a weekly newsletter, and an informational website. Over 15,000 pages on coal-related topics have been posted on GEM.wiki. Topics include environmental and health impacts of coal; profiles of existing and proposed coal plants and mines; and overviews of coal issues in particular states and countries. GEMS's Global Coal Plant Tracker (GCPT) is a database containing information on over 13,000 existing, proposed, and retired coal-fired generating units worldwide. The tracker provides interactive maps and tables on GEM"s public website. The interactive maps and tables allow users to see the location and satellite imagery of individual facilities and to click on links providing footnoted wiki pages on each facility. The GCPT data is also provided in spreadsheet format to researchers at nonprofit groups, universities, international agencies, and media organizations. Its data has been used or cited by over 300 projects. The GCPT is updated twice per year and its findings are publicized in regular reports, most notably in the annual Boom and Bust reports released in nine languages (Chinese, English, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Turkish, and Vietnamese). GCPT results are widely reported by wire services such as Reuters, the Associated Press, and the BBC, with results reported in over 1,000 media outlets with combined audience bases of over a billion people. CoalWire is a weekly news digest on coal provided via email at no charge to over 1,600 subscribers. GEM's Global Coal Public Finance Tracker shows major government financing for global coal projects, covering all projects since 2013 which have received or are likely to receive public support, including proposed projects. Currently the tracker documents public finance for major coal projects in over 40 countries. GEM's forthcoming Global Coal Mine Tracker will provide universal coverage of major global coal extraction, making this data publicly available for free on GEM's website.
Oil and Gas-GEM's oil and gas program includes wiki-based information and a global infrastructure database. Over 6,500 wiki pages on oil and gasrelated topics have been posted on GEM.wiki. Topics include environmental and health impacts of oil and gas; profiles of existing and proposed pipelines and terminals; and overviews of oil and gas issues in particular states and countries. The Global Fossil Infrastructure Tracker (GFIT) is a database containing information on over 2,000 existing, proposed, and retired pipelines and terminals worldwide. The tracker provides interactive maps and tables on GEM's website, allowing users to see the location and satellite imagery of individual facilities, and to click on links providing footnoted wiki pages on each facility. The GFIT data is also provided in spreadsheet format to researchers at nonprofit groups, universities, international agencies, and media organizations. The GFIT is updated regularly and its findings are published in regular reports. CoalSwarm has also created the Europe Gas Tracker, which includes over 1,500 pipelines, power plants, terminals, and extraction areas. GEM's Gas Index models the U.S. natural gas system to calculate life cycle methane leakage for natural gas supplies for 71 cities across the country, providing granular data on the emissions from use of natural gas.
Shared program expenses benefit two or more other program categories (Coal, Oil and Gas, Steel). These expenses include personnel, consulting, and operating costs that aren't applicable to a single GEM program. The interconnected nature of GEM's work means that many of our projects share staff and resources. Shared program outputs include the more than 20,000 publicly-available pages on GEM Wiki as well as all other publications, reports, trackers, data sets, and other informational material that GEM creates to serve stakeholder needs.
