Organizations Filed Purposes: GOLDEN GATE NATIONAL PARKS CONSERVANCY (THE "CONSERVANCY") IS A NOT-FOR-PROFIT COOPERATING ASSOCIATION OF THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE WHOSE MISSION IS TO PRESERVE THE GOLDEN GATE NATIONAL PARKS (THE "PARKS"), ENHANCE THE PARK VISITOR EXPERIENCE, AND BUILD A COMMUNITY DEDICATED TO CONSERVING THE PARKS FOR THE FUTURE. THE PARKS STRETCH ACROSS 80,000 ACRES NORTH AND SOUTH OF THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE AND INCLUDE ALCATRAZ ISLAND, FORT POINT NATIONAL MONUMENT, GOLDEN GATE NATIONAL RECREATION AREA, MUIR WOODS NATIONAL MONUMENT AND THE PRESIDIO, CONSTITUTING ONE OF THE WORLD'S LARGEST NATIONAL PARKS IN AN URBAN SETTING. THE CONSERVANCY IS SUPPORTED BY PRIVATE CONTRIBUTIONS, COOPERATIVE AGREEMENTS, AND INCOME EARNED FROM INTERPRETIVE TOURS AND THE SALE OF EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS AT VISITOR CENTERS THROUGHOUT THE PARKS.

PRESERVE GOLDEN GATE NATIONAL PARKS; ENHANCE VISITOR EXPERIENCE; BUILD A DEDICATED COMMUNITY.

IN FY19 THE GOLDEN GATE NATIONAL PARKS CONSERVANCY WELCOMED NEW PRESIDENT & CEO CHRISTINE LEHNERTZ, WHO JOINED THE CONSERVANCY AFTER A LONG AND DISTINGUISHED CAREER AT THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE (NPS) AND OTHER PUBLIC AGENCIES. HERE ARE SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS FROM FY19, ACHIEVED IN CONCERT WITH THE NPS, PRESIDIO TRUST, AND OTHER KEY PARTNERS:PARK ENHANCEMENTS, RESTORATION, AND STEWARDSHIP:WELCOMED THE FIRST SOIL DELIVERIES FOR THE PRESIDIO TUNNEL TOPS, A MAJOR MILESTONE FOR THE NEW 14-ACRE PARKLAND THAT WILL HAVE A STRONG COMMUNITY FOCUS. THE TUNNEL TOPS, SET TO OPEN IN 2021, WILL SIT ATOP THE PRESIDIO PARKWAY AND RECONNECT THE MAIN POST TO CRISSY FIELD, OFFERING A CENTRAL DESTINATION FOR VISITORS, LOCALS, AND YOUTH FROM AROUND THE REGION.HELPED THE NPS KICK OFF ITS MULTI-YEAR REDWOOD RENEWAL PROJECT AT MUIR WOODS. THE PARKS CONSERVANCY'S PUBLIC INFORMATION COORDINATORS GUIDED VISITORS THROUGH CHANGES TO TRAILS AND TO REDWOOD CREEK, WHERE CREWS INSTALLED "WOODY DEBRIS" TO HELP ENDANGERED COHO SALMON.CELEBRATED 15 YEARS OF STEWARDSHIP OF THE ALCATRAZ HISTORIC GARDENS. THE GARDENS, ONCE TENDED BY ALCATRAZ PRISONERS, HAD FALLEN INTO DISREPAIR BUT ARE CURRENTLY THRIVING THANKS TO THE DEDICATION OF STAFF AND A TEAM OF VOLUNTEERS, MANY OF WHOM HAVE FORMED PERSONAL BONDS ALONG THE WAY.RELEASED THE PARTNERSHIP IMPACT MODEL, BASED ON THE SUCCESSES OF THE ONE TAM PARTNERSHIP. INDEPENDENT RESEARCHERS QUANTIFIED THE POSITIVE IMPACT ON MOUNT TAMALPAIS WHEN THE NPS, CALIFORNIA STATE PARKS, THE MARIN MUNICIPAL WATER DISTRICT, MARIN COUNTY PARKS AND PARKS CONSERVANCY COMBINED RESOURCES TO ENSURE A VIBRANT FUTURE FOR THE MOUNTAIN.

PARK INTERPRETATION AND VISITOR SERVICES:MADE A SPLASH WITH A LIFE-SIZED BLUE WHALE SCULPTURE AT CRISSY FIELD. THE MONTEREY BAY AQUARIUM'S BLUE WHALE ART INSTALLATION BROUGHT THE ISSUE OF OCEAN POLLUTION TO MORE THAN 94,000 VISITORS OVER SIX MONTHS. THE 82-FOOT SCULPTURE WAS MADE FROM RECYCLED PLASTIC COLLECTED IN CALIFORNIA.CELEBRATED THE ECONOMIC IMPACT OF BEING THE MOST-VISITED NATIONAL PARK SITE IN THE NATION. IN 2019, MORE THAN 15 MILLION PEOPLE VISITED THE GOLDEN GATE NATIONAL RECREATION AREA, SPENDING $1.2 BILLION IN COMMUNITIES NEAR THE PARKS, ACCORDING TO THE NPS.

YOUTH, VOLUNTEER, AND COMMUNITY PROGRAMS:RECEIVED NATIONWIDE MEDIA COVERAGE FOR PARKRX, WHICH WAS FEATURED ON PBS NEWSHOUR, TIME MAGAZINE, AND OUTSIDE MAGAZINE, AMONG OTHERS. THE CONSERVANCY'S INSTITUTE AT THE GOLDEN GATE HAS LONG SUPPORTED AND TRACKED PARK PRESCRIPTION PROGRAMS ACROSS THE COUNTRY, AND THE CONSERVANCY HAS WORKED TO CONNECT LOCAL GROUPS LIKE THE SAN FRANCISCO VETERANS AFFAIRS MEDICAL CENTER WITH THE HEALING POWER OF NATURE.WITH THE NPS AND PRESIDIO TRUST, BROUGHT THE SAN FRANCISCO PUBLIC LIBRARY'S SUMMER STRIDE TO THE PRESIDIO. THE SUMMER-LONG PROGRAM FEATURED A KICKOFF EVENT AND A BIKE PARADE FINISH, ALONG WITH THREE STORYWALKS, ALL IN THE PRESIDIO.SERVED NEARLY 20,000 YOUTH FROM MORE THAN 70 SCHOOLS ACROSS THE BAY AREA VIA FREE OR LOW-COST PROGRAMS AT THE CRISSY FIELD CENTER. MANY OF THE YOUTH LEADERS IN PROGRAMS LIKE URBAN TRAILBLAZERS OR I-YEL (INSPIRING YOUNG EMERGING LEADERS) ARE FORMER PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS THEMSELVES, SO DEDICATED TO THE CENTER THAT THEY RETURN SUMMER AFTER SUMMER.
