INDIA PHILANTHROPY ALLIANCE (IPA) INITATIVE: About: IPA is a coalition of nonprofit, philanthropic and charitable organizations that mobilize people and funding in the United States (and elsewhere) for development and poverty-reduction programs in India. This initiative was established to enhance collaboration among organizations working to advance the development agenda in India, working together to foster a more robust and better recognized culture of giving among Indian-Americans and over time, increase the scale and impact of philanthropy benefiting India.Accomplishments: IPA convened its 12 nonprofit member agencies more than 15 times in order to better coordinate their philanthropic, humanitarian and development work in India, and to grow the culture of philanthropy in India. These included 11 leadership meetings, one daylong retreat attended by CEOs and other leaders of its members, and four special webinars focused on effectively responding to the pandemic. IPA published its first website in January 2020, had a major article published in the Stanford Social Innovation Review in October 2019, and participated in several live and virtual conferences during this twelve-month period. The website included a page detailing all of the complementary activities IPA member organizations had launched in response to the pandemic and directed people in terms of how to support those efforts. IPA educated our members about changes in Indian laws related to foreign contributions and about best practices in holding virtual galas. Finally, IPA organized a first-ever youth essay competition that to instill a greater philanthropic spirit among students, especially those of Indian heritage, and to recognize the leadership that some young people are already providing through voluntary humanitarian efforts. More than two dozen young people submitted essays, and after a panel of volunteer judges deliberated, winners and runners-up were chosen in two age categories and their essays were promoted across the country.
