DOUG KAHN ISRAEL TRAVEL OUTREACH FUNDJCRC'S STUDY TOURS OF ISRAEL BRING INFLUENTIAL ELECTED OFFICIALS AND CIVIC LEADERS FROM THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA TO ISRAEL, WITH THE GOAL OF HELPING THEM BETTER UNDERSTAND JEWS, JUDAISM AND ISRAEL THROUGH THIS HANDS-ON JOURNEY. OVER 10 DAYS OF TRAVERSING THE COUNTRY, PARTICIPANTS MEET WITH PROFESSIONAL COUNTERPARTS, LEADING THINKERS, DIPLOMATS, GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS AND STRATEGISTS, AND GAIN AN UNDERSTANDING OF OUR COMMUNITY AND OF ISRAEL BEYOND WHAT COULD BE LEARNED BACK AT HOME OR THROUGH ACCESSING MAINSTREAM WESTERN MEDIA. THERE WERE 16 PARTICIPANTS IN FY18-19. IN SELECTING POTENTIAL STUDY TOUR PARTICIPANTS, JCRC IDENTIFIES PEOPLE IN THE DIVERSE BAY AREA COMMUNITY WHO CAN BE AMPLIFIERS, WHO WILL SHARE THEIR EXPERIENCE AND WHAT THEY LEARNED ABOUT JEWS, JUDAISM, ZIONISM AND ISRAEL, AND WHO WILL EXPOSE THEIR CONSTITUENCIES TO JEWISH VALUES AND ASPIRATIONS. FOLLOWING OUR TRAVELS TOGETHER, JCRC'S BROAD DOMESTIC AGENDA ALLOWS US TO STAY IN CLOSE RELATIONSHIP WITH TRIP PARTICIPANTS AND ALUMNI, DEEPENING THE RELATIONSHIP AND CREATING MUTUAL SUPPORT ON ISSUES OF COMMON CONCERN.
JEWISH COALITION FOR LITERACY WAS FOUNDED IN 1999 TO HELP STRUGGLING YOUNG READERS IMPROVE THEIR SKILLS BY HARNESSING THE TALENTS AND COMMITMENT OF VOLUNTEER TUTORS THROUGHOUT THE BAY AREA.IN THE MOST RECENTLY COMPLETED SCHOOL YEAR, APPROXIMATELY 285 VOLUNTEER TUTORS FROM THE JEWISH COALITION FOR LITERACY SERVED 1,000 CHILDREN ATTENDING SCHOOLS IN SAN FRANCISCO, ALAMEDA, CONTRA COSTA, SAN MATEO, SANTA CLARA AND MARIN COUNTIES. TUTORS WORK PRIMARILY WITH STUDENTS IN GRADES K THROUGH THREE, ALTHOUGH SOME ARE FOURTH OR FIFTH GRADERS WHO STILL STRUGGLE WITH READING. STUDENTS RECEIVE ONE-ON-ONE OR SMALL GROUP SUPPORT EITHER IN THEIR CLASSROOM, THE LIBRARY OR ANOTHER DEDICATED SPACE. MOST STUDENTS ARE SERVED DURING THE SCHOOL DAY, WITH SOME TUTORING OCCURRING DURING AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS. JCL'S PROGRAM-WIDE TUTOR RETENTION RATE IS 79%, WHICH FAR EXCEEDS THE STATE AND NATIONAL AVERAGES.
INSTITUTE FOR CURRICULUM SERVICES IS DEDICATED TO IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF K-12 EDUCATION ON JEWS, JUDAISM, AND ISRAEL IN THE UNITED STATES. IN THE 2018-19 YEAR, ICS DELIVERED 104 IN-PERSON TEACHER TRAININGS, INCLUDING 3 SUMMER INSTITUTES, TO OVER 1,900 SOCIAL STUDIES EDUCATORS IN 30 STATES AND D.C. - LOOKING AT MORE THAN 1,200 EVALUATION FORMS COLLECTED FROM 3 HOUR TRAININGS AND CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS, 99.5% OF ALL PARTICIPANTS SAID THAT THEY WOULD RECOMMEND ICS'S TRAINING TO OTHERS.THROUGH OUR NEW ONLINE COURSE ON THE ARAB-ISRAELI CONFLICT LAUNCHED IN JANUARY, ICS HAS TRAINED HUNDREDS OF TEACHERS. TO DATE, 82 EDUCATORS HAVE COMPLETED THE 5-HOUR COURSE AND RECEIVED A CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION WHICH CAN BE SUBMITTED FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT CREDIT, WHILE THE REMAINDER ARE WORKING AT THEIR OWN PACE AND ARE AT VARYING POINTS WITHIN THE SEMINAR. - PUBLISHERS ACCEPTED 1,154 ICS-RECOMMENDED EDITS FOR THE BETTER IN TEXTBOOKS. BECAUSE OF THE EXTENSIVE AMOUNT OF REVIEWS SUBMITTED IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE YEAR, THIS NUMBER WILL GROW WHEN PUBLISHERS' FINAL REVISIONS ARE PUBLISHED.- ICS ENGAGED WITH A TOTAL OF 23 PUBLISHERS IN 2018-2019 ON CURRENT, PAST, OR FUTURE REVIEW OPPORTUNITIES.- ICS WORKED ON ONE STATE TEXTBOOK ADOPTION IN LOUISIANA, REVIEWING TEXTS FOR NINE PUBLISHERS WHO SUBMITTED TEXTS TO THE STATE, SUBMITTING THEM EITHER TO THE STATE OR DIRECTLY TO THE PUBLISHER.- ICS EVALUATED 13 DRAFTS OF STATE SOCIAL STUDIES STANDARDS AND FRAMEWORKS AND SUBMITTED 11 REVIEWS OF SOCIAL STUDIES STANDARDS AND FRAMEWORKS FOR 7 DIFFERENT STATES WHERE THERE WERE CONCERNS (THERE WERE MULTIPLE ROUNDS IN SOME STATES): CALIFORNIA, KANSAS, KENTUCKY, MICHIGAN, OHIO, OKLAHOMA, TEXAS, WYOMING, MAINE.
