LearnUp Centers is a nonprofit literacy center based in San Francisco on a mission to teach all levels and types of learners to read.
We successfully pivoted all of our in-person tutoring to remote tutoring, with the same incredible results. And continued to offer financial aid and full scholarships to over ? of our students. We kept all of our tutors employed and 95% of our families successfully converted from in-person tutoring to online tutoring within the first two weeks of the Covid shutdowns. Pivoting to online tutoring has expanded our audience and our tutors and eliminated our geographic boundaries.We developed a partnership with Boys and Girls Clubs of San Francisco to bring our programs and tutors directly into their clubhouses and afterschool programs. By spring, all of these programs were delivered virtually by our tutors, opening a new way to provide one-on-one tutoring. LearnUp has also funded teachers to attend the trainings and provided free and low-cost professional development to our hardest hit communities.We offered our reading workshop How to Teach Reading to Everyone online for free and over 1,000 people from all over the world signed up. LearnUp created a suite of online workshops to train classroom teachers and volunteers how to teach reading. Over 300 people have taken our online courses on how to teach reading, comprehension, Kindergarteners, children with learning differences.
