The mission of The Long Now Foundation is to promote long-term thinking and to explore new ways to inspire others to think long-term. A broader understanding of the present moment can reframe enormous challenges as tractable and imply deep responsibility to future generations. Long Now advances this mission through a variety of projects and programs ranging from the monument-scale 10,000 Year Clock to the micro-scale Rosetta Project archive of human languages. All projects aim to shift culture toward a longer temporal perspective. All programs aim to connect long-term thinkers from around the world.
Through its projects and programs, The Long Now Foundation works to foster long-term thinking and responsibility in the framework of the next 10,000 years.
THE INTERVAL - A COMPELLING VENUE FOR CONVERSATION THAT INVITES VISTORS TO SPEND TIME IN A PLACE THAT ITSELF ENCOURAGES LONG TERM THINKING. THE INTERVAL IS A BAR, CAFE, MUSEUM AND THE HOME OF THE LONG NOW FOUNDATION. FEATURING A FLOOR-TO-CEILING LIBRARY OF THE BOOKS YOU MIGHT NEED TO REBUILD CIVILIZATION, MECHANICAL PROTOTYPES FOR A CLOCK MEANT TO LAST FOR 10,000 YEARS, ART THAT CONTINUALLY EVOLVES IN REAL TIME, AND A TIME-INSPIRED MENU OF ARTISAN DRINKS.
10,000 YEAR CLOCK - THE 10,000-YEAR CLOCK PROJECT WAS CONCEIVED AS A MONUMENT TO LONG-TERM THINKING. THE CLOCK IS DESIGNED TO RUN FOR TEN MILLENNIA WITH MINIMAL MAINTENANCE AND INTERUPTION. THE CLOCK IS POWERED BY MECHANICAL ENERGY HARVESTED FROM SUNLIGHT AS WELL AS THE PEOPLE THAT VISIT IT. THE PRIMARY MATERIALS USED IN THE CLOCK ARE MARINE GRADE 316 STAINLESS STEEL, TITANIUM AND DRY RUNNING CERAMIC BALL BEARINGS. THE ENTIRE MECHANISM WILL BE INSTALLED IN AN UNDERGROUND FACILITY IN WEST TEXAS.
SEMINARS ABOUT LONG-TERM THINKING - THE LONG NOW FOUNDATION'S MONTHLY SEMINARS WERE STARTED IN 2003 TO BUILD A COMPELLING BODY OF IDEAS ABOUT LONG-TERM THINKING; TO HELP NUDGE CIVILIZATION TOWARD OUR GOAL OF MAKING LONG-TERM THINKING AUTOMATIC AND COMMON INSTEAD OF DIFFICULT AND RARE.
