Meedan designs and develops open source software, leads monitoring projects, produces assessment standards, and conducts trainings in support of global digital journalism, human rights media investigations, digital health interventions, fact-checking, and media verification.
Check - In 2019 Meedans Check platform was used by 1,749 journalists and investigators in 49 countries. LatAm (Mexico, Argentina, Columbia, Brazil) US, The APAC (Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Philippines), Europe (Moldova, the UK, and France) and the Middle East (Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen) focused on fact-checking, open source investigation, and digital media verification. We worked with partners in India, led by the Proto team to verify media during the course of that election, processing more than 150,000 messages submitted for verification. Check encompasses all areas of Meedans work in programs, research, network, content, and technology. (Continued on Schedule O.)
USAID Article 19 - Meedan ran a coworking pop-up in Niarobi focused on collaboration, skill-sharing, and the dissemination of disinformation research surrounding the 2019 Population and Housing Census. In collaboration with experts from Pesa Check, Africa Check, and the University of Nairobi, Meedan co-created a set of indicators to identify hate speech, misinformation, and disinformation in the Kenyan context, which was used in collaborative workshops to develop strategies for supporting the work of civil society organizations (CSOs), mitigating harmful impacts, and creating pathways for platform advocacy.
Cred Co - In partnership with Hacks/Hackers, Meedan continued work on the Credibility Coalition, a project we founded to design, implement, and conduct research on machine readable content credibility indicators for weblinks, images, and claims. Our Pop Up Newsroom initiative (a partnership with Dig Deeper Media) also conducted election monitoring efforts in Sweden and Zimbabwe.
