Mirabel Pictures mission is to create artistically bold projects that explore thecritical issues of our time. We believe in the power of art and media to create positive social and economic change in the world. Our ventures are diverse in scope, yet our body of work is united by visually stunning, emotionally impactful projects that push boundaries and catalyze meaningful change. With all of our projects, we work to cultivate community engagement that inspires, educates, and transforms audiences into socially engaged citizens.
Freetown Media Center & Filmmaker Fellowship:Mirabel Pictures continues to support the WeOwnTV Freetown Media Center, an important educational and creative hub in the heart of the capital city in Sierra Leone. Our support helps provide a safe space to work, access to equipment, educational programming, and professional development to a collective of talented, young filmmakers. We have also expanded our reach in the West African sub-region by launching the WeOwnTV Filmmaker Fellowship: a film fund and professional development program supporting the production of independent documentaries directed by West African filmmakers. The program is open to filmmakers working in Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.
HTBD (Yo) - Heaven Through the Back Door: Our multi-platform documentary project called Heaven Through the Backdoor. Heaven Through the Backdoor explores identity, judgment, and spirituality through the experience of Swiss migr Yo (Yolanda Shea), a fiercely independent 88-year old woman who we meet as she prepares for her next great adventure: death. Death is at once unthinkable and inevitable - wrestling with this duality is the primary focus of our film Heaven Through the Backdoor. How do we navigate the finality of a last conversation with a friend? How do we process regret or reconcile with what is still unresolved? How does a loving relationship transmute upon death? The project juxtaposes intimate documentary footage with cinematic interpretations of Yos stories using intricately built miniature sets and other creations.
Survivors: Our documentary film entitled Survivors grew out of this long-standing collaboration with the WEOwnTV Freetown Media Centre. I north America, the film was broadcast on PBS award-winning series POV in North America and worldwide on al Jazeera. In 2019, the film was recently nominated for a Peabody and Emmy Award in 2019. Survivors chronicle the stories of three Sierra Leoneans during what is now widely regarded as the most acute public health crisis of the modern era. Drawing from deeply personal stories at the epicenter of the epidemic, the film boldly shares the individual bravery and humanity of the people caught in an unfolding crisis. This film and its outreach components have been supported by ITVS, NEH, the MacArthur foundation Sundance Institute, among others.
