The World Health Organization declared a global health emergency in January 2020 and in March 2020,it declared the spread of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. On March 6, 2020 San Francisco required allperformances in city owned venues to close for two weeks, andon March 17, 2020 extended the closuresto privately owned venues and announced a Shelter in Place (SIP) order that remains in place.Consequently, SFP has been closed to the public since March of 2020, however, the many pivots inplanning and focus throughout 2020 assured the continuing viability of the Playhouse. Some of the pivots taken included:canceling the four remaining shows of the 2019-2020 Season, furloughing over 50% of the staff, while continuing to provide health care coverage, obtaining a Payroll Protection Program Loan that will likely be forgiven in 2021,engaging the Board of Directors in a Bridge campaign which raised approximately $750,000, renegotiating two of our leases to significantly reduce rent expense, andre-imagining theatre offerings to digital format to continue providing content that supports themission. SFP successfully produced and streamed for a paying audience three new productionsduring the last quarter of 2020.Black Lives MatterOn Memorial Day (May 25, 2020) the killing of George Floyd triggered a global outcry for racial andsocial justice that extended significantly into the performing arts and theatre specifically.Several interest groups formed and presented theatre companies with demand lists.Nationally the We See You White American Theater and in the Bay Area, the Living Document calledfor change in the historic leadership and composition of arts organizations.SFP responded to these calls for action with both short and long-term plans. In the short-term a public statement emphasizing SFPs longstanding to equity, diversity and inclusionwas circuled and posted to the website, and a task force comprised of staff, management and Boardmembers was created to review current policies and procedures and to recommend changes, as necessary. In the long-term that task force will become a standing Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) committeeto serve as an accountability group to ensure that SFP practices remain aligned with evolving goals ofinclusion. In addition, EDI will continue to be an important element of SFPs artistic choices as well as criteria forboard and staff recruitment.
