Organizations Filed Purposes:
Senior Disability action mobilizes and educates seniors and people with disabilities to fight for individual rights and social justice. Through individual support and collective action, we work together to create a city and world in which seniors and people with disabilities can live well and safely.
Senior Disability Empowerment Program - Educated more than 200 people through Senior and Disability University and Senior and Disability Survival School. Brought residents together to share their experiences with housing, pedestrian safety, and other issues. Started the new Voluntary Services Coalition, to work on issues of mental health and homelessness. Ran a free Computer Lab for seniors and people with disabilities, outfitted with new software and hardware to meet varying accessibility needs, offering group classes and individual help from several peer assistants.
Housing Program - Counseled 200 people on housing rights, distributed 1500 tenant rights/eviction prevention information sheets in multiple languages. Held monthly Housing Collaborative meetings and Senior and Disability SRO Workgroup meetings. Raised awareness of the need for rental subsidies and eviction prevention for low-income seniors and people with disabilities. Worked with community organizations and city staff to develop a housing bond, including 150 million for senior housing.
Long-Term Care Consumer Rights - Reached 2000 people through peer assistance and consumer rights advocacy on accessing health care, benefits, and other resources. Offered training on low-cost resources, advanced directives, and ageism and ableism. Participated in the first-ever Disability and Aging Capitol Action Day, and discussed the need for long-term services and supports for all Californians.
