TO ADVANCE A JUST, EQUITABLE, AND SUSTAINABLE WORLD THROUGH ADVOCACY, FUNDING AND CIVIC ENGAGEMENT OF UNDERREPRESENTED COMMUNITIES.
WDN ACTION FURTHER DEVELOPED ITS GRANTMAKING STRATEGY AND ADVOCACY PROGRAM IN 2019 AND FOCUSED ON FOSTERING THE CIVIC ENGAGEMENT OF WOMEN AND OTHER UNDERREPRESENTED COMMUNITIES AS WELL AS COMMUNITY POWER-BUILDING. WDN ACTION MADE $1,475,000 IN GRANTS TO 16 ORGANIZATIONS DURING 2019. THESE GRANTS INCLUDED SUPPORT FOR ORGANIZATIONS THAT ARE WORKING TO ADVANCE REPRODUCTIVE JUSTICE, VOTING RIGHTS, FAIR ELECTIONS, AND CLIMATE JUSTICE PROGRAMS. OTHER FUNDING SUPPORTED ORGANIZATIONS WORKING TO ENGAGE YOUNG IMMIGRANTS AND NATIVE AMERICANS TO ADVOCATE FOR THEIR OWN COMMUNITIES AND TO DEEPEN THE CIVIC ENGAGEMENT OF BLACK AMERICANS IN THE SOUTH. AS PART OF ITS EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH TO ENGAGE WOMEN DONORS IN THIS ADVOCACY STRATEGY, THE ORGANIZATION HELD AN EDUCATIONAL SESSION FOLLOWING THE WOMEN DONORS NETWORK'S ANNUAL CONFERENCE IN CHICAGO, ILLINOIS IN NOVEMBER 2019. THIS SESSION WAS ATTENDED BY APPROXIMATELY 120 WOMEN DONORS WHO LEARNED ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION'S VISION AND ADVOCACY STRATEGY HEADING INTO 2020.
WDN ACTION HELD ITS ANNUAL "WOMEN ON THE HILL" ADVOCACY TRAINING AND LOBBYING DAY IN WASHINGTON, DC DURING APRIL 30 - MAY 2, 2019. THE PROGRAM BEGAN WITH A DAY-LONG TRAINING FOR THE 49 PARTICIPANTS, INCLUDING TOPICS SUCH AS UNDERSTANDING THE LANDSCAPE OF KEY PROGRESSIVE ISSUES IN THE CURRENT POLITICAL MOMENT AND LEARNING AND PRACTICING LOBBYING SKILLS, FOLLOWED BY A DAY OF LOBBYING TOGETHER ON CAPITOL HILL. THE GROUP MET WITH MEMBERS OF CONGRESS AND THEIR LEGISLATIVE STAFF TO URGE CONGRESSIONAL ACTION TO SUPPORT REPRODUCTIVE JUSTICE THROUGH THE EACH WOMAN ACT, ADVANCE CLIMATE JUSTICE WITH A GREEN NEW DEAL, AND PRESERVE VOTING RIGHTS AND EXPAND AMERICANS' ACCESS TO THE BALLOT BOX THROUGH THE FOR THE PEOPLE ACT. THE PROGRAM CONCLUDED WITH A BRIEFING ON DEMOCRACY REFORMS AND EFFORTS TO OPPOSE VOTER SUPPRESSION AND A FINAL SESSION ON ACTION-PLANNING AND DEVELOPING NEXT STEPS FOR THE ORGANIZATION'S ONGOING ADVOCACY PROGRAMS.
